Methanol/Water, Alky Injection Experiences..

After an experience I had, and some research I've been doing, I am considering a methanol injection system to give me a little bump in power, and would like to hear from those of you that are running it.

What do you like about it?

What do you NOT like about it?

What gains have you seen from running it?

Who tuned it your system?

What EMS?

Which kit do you have, and how much was it?

1) It gives me a little more headroom running the stock injectors w/ an afc @ 12-14psi.

2) No complaints here. Been running it for quite some time (1.5 years??)

3) 235 whp/252 lb/ft on a dyno dynamics at 12-13psi. Built engine, downpipe, afc and custommsp intercooler. Stock turbo, injectors. Stock intake(even filter). Stock catback.

4) Snow stage one kit w/ a Zeitronix failsafe. Bought it from a vendor on Evom as no one was selling a kit at the time on here. Kit was $300 to my door.

Attempting to acquire either some 06 USDM WRX 565 fuel injectors or the JDM STi Pink 550cc before I do this.

Part numbers for refference:

JDM STi "Pinks" -
Subaru WRX STi JDM "Pink" Injectors 565cc 16611AA510

USDM INjectors -
Subaru WRX 2006 565cc Injectors USDM 16611AA720

Sorry, but I do not have it on my car anymore. I ran it for a while with the stock intercooler and noticed no difference in performance, even during the summer. Do not get this unless you are going to be tuning for it, just my advice.

I was planning on getting it tuned but I haven't been able to save enough for a $1000 tuner (don't like messing with wires), so I took it off my car since I wanted my windsheild washers back.

So those would be "Subie" part numbers to cross reference against? (Just asking for ordering from RC.)

First, you might want to go to http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123684236&highlight=Unichip+meets to read about my methanol tuning experience in South Florida.

1. What I like about the kit is that it provides an added level of safety when I am running the high boost map on my Unichip, assuming that the kit itself does not failand it has not in approximately 1.5 years of use. Also nice is the fact that I do not have to run 100 octane gas at the track (not that I go that often), as spraying methanol/water bumps my (R+M)/2 octane to at least 98, assuming that methanol is 114 octane (I've seen the octane of methanol reported to be both higher and lower, I should add).

2. There is nothing that I do not like about running the methanol/water injection. I use the windshield washer reservoir in the MSP as the methanol/water reservoir, which reduces the underhood clutter.

3. There are essentially no gains from the kit without tuning the engine management for it, as my thread above will attest. I picked up 20 whp peak and 12 wtq peak, but more importantly, I fattened the area under the curves significantly, which is key.

4. Roger and Jack at JapTrix, located in Riviera Beach Florida, did the fine job of tuning.

5. I run Unichip for my EMS.

6. I bought the kit from an outfit called Engine RunUp, but do not recommend them, as their service was essentially nill after I bought the kit and asked a few questions. The kit is a CoolingMist progressive controller, their 150 psi methanol compatible Shurflo pump, an M4 injector, and all the other parts to complete the installation (which I did on my own). I paid $389 for it, not including the micro filter and shipping. I do not use the filter anymore.

By the way, I run a mixture of 75% methanol and 25% distilled water.

so my question is how od you mix the methanol like what do you use as methanol?

You buy it (methanol) and mix it with distilled water. You can buy 50/50 premix from Snow performance. Costs alot more than doing it yourself. I can get a 5 gallon pail of VP meth for $38 locally. You can run washer fluid, but the meth content is only about 20-30% and the detergents in the washer fluid can plug up your nozzle.

so my question is how od you mix the methanol like what do you use as methanol?

Yea ive seen the galons of it from snow but i was wondering where i could get it to mix it for my self when i install my aem meth kit for my hi boost setting. thanks

My source of methanol is a product called Heetin the yellow bottle. It can be found at any auto parts store, Walmart, K-Mart, and the like. It comes in sealed 12 ounce bottles and costs between $1.20$1.50 per bottle in my area. The MSDS confirms that it is 99% methanol. In fact, many (but not all) "dri-gas" products are almost all methanol too. You can search out the MSDS sheet for such dri-gas products on the internet to confirm their methanol content. The Evo, Subie, SRT, and Turbo Buick guys have a lot of information on their forums of this ilk.

I dump two bottles of Heet (or similar product) in my windshield wiper reservoir and then 12 ounces of a cheap generic 20 degree F windshield wiper fluid (the MSDS shows it to be 33% methanol). If you do the math, that works out to be a mixture of 77% methanol and essentially 23% water. I have not had any issues with this mixture, and my car seems to like it quite a bit. This approach is common among the guys who run alcohol injection on the above-mentioned boards.

One nice thing about using these products, is that you let the store hold your inventory of the rather dangerous chemical methanola consideration if you have children and pets running around the area where such chemicals are stored at your residence.

interesteing topic.

when you say "tune for it". what do you mean? Does it cause a rich condition and you lean the ems out? or is it a timing issue? or hows it work...

meth raises your octane rating and cools your combustion temps. that way you can run more boost and tune more agressively

Yes it would make you run rich, and yes you would lean out your map when running this stuff. Running Methanol Injection means that you require less fuel to be sprayed into the cylinder.
