Mazdaspeed6 Clutch Fix TSB

Hey, no worries!

Thank you all the same for the advice...

I noticed in the Mazda Speed parts book at the dealer that they had a lightweight flywheel and sport clutch option...

Most likely crazy expensive; but if I was to pay for the work out of pocket; I was curious if it is a good way to go...

Has anyone else here tried that MS options?

For a Mazdaspeed6?

Has far as I know that flywheel doesn't work for the Mazdaspeed3/6 it's only for the regular 2.3L Mazda3/6

That may very well be true!

I honestly am not certain myself; it did not say on the CD or on the dealer pamphlet.

I'm going by what people have said according to parts dealers/tuners such as Protege Garage and CP-E that the flywheel sold by Mazda itself doesn't fit properly on the DISI 2.3L cars (Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6)

However I do believe there are current aftermarket flywheels that fit.... check out protegegarage.com and street unit.com and maybe even therpmstore.com

2006 Type A clutch FIXED.
1st dealership said it was an adjustment and the clutch was out of warranty.
2nd dealership thought the clutch felt fine, but decided to check out if my VIN had any recalls or TSB's...and there it was, done.
26k miles (about)
CAI Intake and BOV still on.

After 400-500miles, it feels great. Much smoother and easier to shift...

I do have one question, how long should I 'break-in' in the clutch? or do I not need to?

I would say you've already achieved the "break-in" with your 500 miles already on it.

I mean usually a new car's engine (like getting a built engine) or even a new turbo setup, the general rule is usually 500 to 600 miles before bagging on it. Unless it's changed from since I last learned about it years ago.

I guess I'm a little confused - I bought my speed6 used a few months back and it now has a little over 20k on it. Regardless if my vin falls under the TSB for this clutch issue, its not going to be covered because of the mileage?

-I'm glad to hear of this issue though in a way because I've driven manuals my whole life and although I love my car I've gotta say its kinda hard to drive with this clutch, atleast smoothly - I started to think maybe i lost my touch ahaha

How many miles on it when you purchased it?

The mileage on the car depends solely upon the dealer.... many people have gotten the clutch fixed with more than 13k miles on the car [clutch warranty] and others have been turned down until they found another dealer that said yes.

It had like 16,500 on it when I bought it.

Ya it just depends on the dealership you go to, most everyone has to go to a few before they find a dealership willing to do it because technically it is not under warranty after 12k miles

and you're wondering how you've put about 4,000 miles on it in 3 months? That's not so bad....

I drive a little over 60 miles a day for work alone.... 5 days a week.... that's i'll just be even and say 300 a week.... times 4, 1200 a month... and that's not including where i go AFTER work and on the weekends.... in 3 months I've already traveled 3,600 miles for work alone.

So I guess.... do you drive a long distance to work or anything? Or do you just drive long trips to like family's homes?

Otherwise maybe someone's been borrowing your car while you sleep? LOL(lol2)

Ha, actually ya I drive about 60miles roundtrip for work everyday. I do alot of other driving as well. However, that wasn't really my concern of how I put that much mileage on it since I bought it. It was more because I was trying to find out at what point they won't do the clutch repair anymore

I just got my MS6 1 week ago, I have driven it a couple of times since. At first I thought it was just me, I thought I just had to get used to a different type of clutch. I actually stalled a couple of times when I wasnt paying attention. And especially when I'm on a hill I have to watch my take off.

Now that I read this thread, I realize it not just me, and the pedal does catch way to high and has a weird feel when depressing it.
I purchased it with 28900 miles on it, iv only put like 160 miles on it and I wanted to go to dealership and see if the repair can get done on the car.

Is there somewhere where it is listed that the repair cannot be done on MS6 with more then 12k miles? Some people have gotten it replaced with more miles. Some people are saying that so long as the car is in warranty then they should be able to do it , no matter if the mileage is over 12k.
Here is a link to the actual TSB http://www.finishlineperformance.com/pdf/mazda6/bulletin/05-003-07-1740.pdf

I cant see anywhere that it states the car cannot have more then 12k, is there another bulliten that states that? I really dont want to be dicking around between dealerships, i get one day off a week. I wank to make sure there is no 12k rule, in case they try it on me. Thanks.

I live in NYC, anyone from my area get this done? or some state close by, NJ or CT?

I think it depends on your dealership. I went to one and they said the clutch is fine then the second dealership I went to they said it was past the warranty with 20k miles on it and the third dealership did the repair no hassles : )

Which dealership did you go to? I see your sig says boston on it. Did you just show them the TSB and told them that you needed it?

Anyone else have any thoughts, anyone have a dealership in the tristate area NY, NJ, CT that has done it?

I just called my dealership. Told them the year, gave them the TSB number and asked if they could confirm authenticity and if my car would qualify. They've seen it before so had the VIN and everything. They called me back within 20 minutes saying they were ordering the parts and will call me when the parts get there. They didn't even need to see the car. I've got 23000 miles on mine.

Really wow, that was easy, this was a dealership up in Rochester?

I should clarify my post. They didn't need to see my car THIS time. They have seen it before and in fact this is the 2nd time I'll be taking it in for the clutch, the first time they just said they adjusted it.

Also, the way the Tech explained it they were doing this under vehicle warranty, NOT the clutch warranty.

I know what you mean bu the cluch feeling funny. I actually came across this on a modded Speed3, and it was a little issue with the pedal height not set properly from the factory. this is common on most of the Speed 3/6 cars. You can adjust it yourself.

Another problem might actually be the clutch. Of course you get those people that can't drive without riding the clutch constantly, and this of course causes premature failure.

I have my Speed 6, with the older style clutch from 06 with 73K on it, and it feels just like it did from when I bought the car brand new. The only differences be the old, and new styles is the pressure plate. The newer doesn't have the same holding pressure as the older on therefore they think it's easier to drive, but you don't get the same holding capabilities as the older clutch style.

For those of you that don't know the AWD set/ Trans axle of the Speed 3/6. It's ported over directly from the RS focus in Europe. The AWD is the WRC focus setup with one difference in the rear differential.

Man when I purchased this car in the begining , I was having mad problems with the clutch. I kept stalling at first, and thought it was me, untill I read that there was an issue with the clutch.

Took the car to my local dealership, they replaced it and now everything is OK. The clutch feels 100 times better, Im so happy.

If I would have had to keep the car with the old #$%^& clutch, I would have Shot myself. It was the worst clutch ever, thankgoodness it was fixed
