mazdaspeed3 motor swap into an MP5?

He said it was direct drop in, just some work on the transmition mount and the wiring harness.

i'd like to see that definition of a "direct drop in" considering how much different the two setups are

That is what he told me. Maybe an over statement. I will try to go by there and see if he is around and maybe look at the car(eyeballs)

Do you know his username? I want to search for his thread.

BTW, even swapping a 2.3 into a protege chassis would be worth looking into.

the honda vs mazda comparison really isnt fair. honda engineers vehicles and components to be far more interchangable across vehicle lines making swaps easier by comparison.

honestly, there is no compelling reason to drop a DISI 2.3 into a car that doesn't already have it. its cheaper, easier, quicker to make your standard 2.3 from an 04 mazda3 faster than it is to convert to a DISI setup. plenty more parts available, its a relatively stout engine even stock and you don't have the fuel system handicaps that you would with the DISI. i'd wager to say you'd spend alot less money getting a standard 2.3, building it, boosting it, being faster than a DISI swap.

everything would have to be custom getting this engine into a 3rd gen protege. the engine situates itself in the reverse position that a protege engine does (intake manifold in front, etc) the transmissions are not remotely alike, there is the issue of the throttle by wire system versus a traditional throttle setup, completely rewiring the car, custom exhaust, custom engine mounts, getting the dash to work, all the sensors involved in making the car smog legal, the fuel system...

is this a buzzkill or a nay say or a poo poo on the idea? yes, absolutely. when all is said and done can it be done? sure, with money. how much do you want to spend and what would you like the end result to be? its like when people ask me about doing the AWD swap from a Sport20 to thier protege. the parts alone will put you at the price tag of a used WRX and whats the result? a 130hp car losing power to four wheels instead of just two. Realism, pessimism, call it what you like.

Build the 2.0, boost it, enjoy it.

I think I'm in love with this post (bowdown)

Here is the thing, there is a great drop in option for the protege---the V6 from the MX-6 as mentioned before. Heck it will even drop right on the motor mounts! The hardest sticking point is the wiring harness. The reason is that mazda in there infinite wisdom taped up the engine wiring harness with the dash wiring. The V6 would give more displacement and power possiblities. You could go the high output route and get 180-190 HP, or you could build it up and turbo it. You may say get an evo, wrx, or MS3----but I dare to say don't. Cheaper insurance and part costs. I would also mention I heard the rear suspension is actually better on the protege5 then the MS3. Now do not get me wrong, the AWD guys will get you with messy surfaces. Though how often are you racing a evo on dirt or grave? We have a lighter car versuses them, so that gives an advantages. I know with suspension we can handle EXTREMELY well. With my mods I have almost pulled even with Rx-8, 350Z within a second in AutoX. So if I finally put the brake stuff on, and put on some springs and struts, rear trailing arms and front under brace it would handle really good (minus tires). Then you would add in some power, heck yeah!

I would mention that I asked what it would cost to swap in a 2.5 V6 it it was $7,000. Yeah you could buy a turbo and stuff, but I figure if built-up the V6 would keep you more usable power over the whole range. Who know, I might do it down the line (several years).
