Mazdaspeed LSD Revisited

Why don't you all buy the lsd from mazdaformance.com. It's like $460 or somethin...
I just looked and don't see it listed at all

Email them.... that's what I did...
I just pulled up the email and the price they gave me is $452.36

my clutch is starting to slip so i ordered the act stage 2 hdss clutch kit and the jdm chromoly flywheel

the lsd is very interesting as i don't have time and will most likely have a shop do the install (a reputable one) and save on labor...just don't want to have to find alternate transportation while the car sits in the shop if the tranny has to be shipped to corksport to be installed

This wont happen if you provide them with the right info, I was the 2nd person i know of that had this done at the time, so i couldn't argue with my dealer about it. Id print out all the LSD threads and give them to the installer and they should have no problems.

Could buy it form them atleast although do the install yourself.
Its what I may be planning. Defenitl'y beats doing the quafi.

whats wrong with the quafi, other than cost, i thought it was a better lsd then the msp one?

The Quaife is a much better unit, but it does require some modification. However, the extent of it is to make a little clearance for the bolt heads (which stick out a little farther). No messing with the speedo gear and such (not sure how it all works, but I've talked to two people that have installed them and they say the install is "easy" if you have access to a place to do the slight machining.

I've also talked to a few "pros" who say it is a much better unit than the Mazdaspeed one. Gear vs. Viscous I believe. Anyway, I can't say too much because I still haven't gotten off my butt to install it. Damn my job is ruining my "mod schedule".

Anyway, LSDs are great in any form I would guess. . .some are created better, but whether you can even notice that I do not know. I do know that the Mazdaspeed one will be "quieter" since it is not a gear system, but by BOV and exhaust pretty much took care of the "quiet" thing already.

Maybe I'll rip the car apart this weekend and get started, don't have anything going on that I know of. . .when I do get that far, I will definitely post pics and such.

I don't doubt that the Quaife is a nice, strong unit. But I have read reviews about how viscous might be preferred over gear type LSDs. And of course, vice versa.

Wait a minute, isn't the Mazdaspeed a clutch type lsd, not viscous? Oh, and I retract my statement about the viscous lsd, the only good thing about them is they should last a while...

viscous and clutch lsd are the same. The temp of the oil goes up when one wheel turn faster the oil compress the clutch and lock the diff.

I'm going for the speed lsd this winter but in my first gen turbo protege.

Thanks for the info, really well explained page. Didn't paid to much attention in school in that section of the course. The vicous work in the same way a torque converter works.

zx2?

i've been doing my research and us zx2's dont have a lsd ..least yet..
and i was wondering what your thoughts on this fitting the zx2?
we have the g5m 4:10 final drive
im almost tempted to try this as i've seen everyone doing it to first gen protege's with little modification..something about bolts needed to be ground down or something
anything thoughts?
thanks
Jarred

Wait, do you have the G5M, the G15M, or the G25M? Because I don't think the G5 was ever made after 1991....

g5m....100% positive..it runs in the escort lines..since late 80's i believe..im positive though cause i've changed the tranny once already and have seen g5m everywhere..
let me know
thanks
Jarred
