Mazdaspeed exhaust.... turn the dB down

Is it possible to use a product like dynamat (for car audio) and coat the area under the spare tire on my Protege 5 to make my New Mazdaspeed exhaust not so annoying when going over 65 mph? I love the sound but not past 3,200 or so rpm. Does anyone have their trunk/hatchback dynamatted? w/ a more then stock exhaust system/axleback?

A new exhaust is not an option only putting back the stock one is, so don't recommend another brand..... I'm trying to keep my 6 year bumper to bumper/ 75,000 warrrenty in tack for now since I only have 500 miles on the car.

I wouldn't mind losing some of the low rpm growl as long as that loud "buzzing" sound would be gone/reduced when driver over 65 in my 2003.5 auto protege 5.

I know someone was thinking about putting dynamat around the metal peice that is around our exhaust but I don't think he ever went threw with it..... it would probably eventually come off from being exposed to the elements.

the exhuast doesnt void your warranty, cause this is confusing ive seen the thread on here, but im confused on whos right, i dont know which aftermarket parts i can put on it? But i have a PR5 is the warranty any different than a MSP?

Mazda calls their after marketparts "mazdaspeed" but I have a protege 5. The logic is bascially you can do ANYTHING to your car as long as you keep the stock part around and change your car back to stock before you bring it in for warrenty work. A lot of people do this with CAI like the Injen.

But I didn't want to do that. So some basic things that you can do and KEEP in are.

1. Mazdaspeed exhaust (mazdastuff.com)
2. Drop in K&N air filter ( 30 dollars online @ autozone.com)
3. Any Car Audio things like new speakers, HU, but i think they get anal about car audio batteries? I think but i'm not sure.
3. Car Rims as long as you try to keep about the same circumference.
4. Window Tint
5. I THINK their are some mazdaspeed headers? for the p5 that I don't THINK will void anything but i'm not sure on that either.

it's the price you pay for performance. a free-flowing exhaust most of the time equals a louder sound. if your exhaust is buzzy, try a resonator. that should quiet things down a bit. but all exhausts are gonna drone at highway speeds. man you should hear mine at 75 mph! it's pretty loud.

Well I've been searching and http://www.dynamat.com/auto_dynashield.htm seems like it might be the ticket. I could spray this around the metal casing that is around the protege 5's exhaust. I'm just suprised no one on this board has done anything similair yet.

you obviously know nothing of the Magnusson-Moss act and because of that you're ready to accept shaft from any dealer... why don't you educate yourself first so you can keep that from happening?

You can bolt on whatever crap you want on your car and it will NOT affect overall vehicle warranty.. IF the aftermarket part is proven to have caused failure of another part, then the warranty of that failed part is of course denied... and of course the warranty of the changed part is no longer existant because it is now aftermarket (duh)

if you are so worried about the damn warranty, you shouldn't have gotten a new car to begin with if you like messing with your car... go do whatever you want and enjoy it!

Ahhh alot of people (not on this forum) by a new car for just that A WARRENTY> I'm new to this whole fixing up thing anyways. Yes I know all about the Magnusson-Moss Act. If I put on an Injen Intake... and my suspension breaks i'm covered BUT if I blow an engine then i'm screwed and I don't have money to shell out on things that should be covered just because I spent $200 on some intake. I might get more balls and do things when I know I can AFFORD for my car to break. I.E. when i get out of college and hopefully have a salary not some hourly wage. This comes from after formly owning a 93 honda accord EX that cost me at least 3,500 dollars in repairs. I rememeber the timing belt was very expensive and in the end had a new AC put in for 1,600 (which broke 2 weeks later). SO warrenties are a welcome to me.

I have only done small things to my car like for example the madzaspeed exhaust doesn't effect my powertrain warrenty at all and the only thing I'd ever have to worry about coming out of my pocket is if the actual mazdaspeed exhaust broke a few years down the road.

But anyways the day i get a salary is the day I start having actual fun with my car/cars.

I just put Dynamat(or something like it) in the rear of my P5 because I'm preparing for a new sub, and as a little side-bonus I swear my Mazdaspeed exhaust isn't as ...intrusive as before. I dynamatted the whole interior rear cargo area, not just around the exhaust.

installing an intake DOES NOT void the engine warranty... it is simply not allowed by the Magnusson-Moss act... if the engine blows up because of other causes while you had the aftermarket intake, there's nothing the manufacturer can do to deny you the warranty... IF the intake DID cause the engine to blow up, then the warranty is of course denied... but they have to prove it

as long as you THINK and not do stupid s***, nothing bad is going to happen... so stop worrying about it

and if you want a quiet performance exhaust, the racing beat is it

Its good prep for future sub addition, and in my old Honda ( ack! ) the dynamat I put in the trunk noticeably reduced the droning, but I put it everywhere, sides back took out the tailights etc, and did some doubling up as well. It can't hurt.

you could add another resonator....but that would probably make it too quiet. The dynamat should help, also the dealer told me that if you got undercoating done, that should keep out some of the noise too. not sure bout that. But like the man said, racing beat is the way to go.

you won't void any warranty if you get a cat back. that's like saying you'll void warranty if you change out your tires or rims. the exhaust does nothing other than to free up exhaust flow. if a catback can somehow cause engine damage, i'll pay for your repairs. just get a properly designed catback that's quiet (like racing beat). you won't spend as much and you won't weigh down your car as much.

Yeah I see where you are coming from but like i said i'm still learning, think i'll spend the money for some extreme dynamat they have huge kits on ebay for $120 thats enough for your whole car. If that doesn't work i guess I should look into the racing beat exhaust.

I, more than anyone here, can appreciate the laws used to keep our warranties in tact. I want to let you know the truth. Those acts and the consumer bill of rights WILL protect you from warranty claim denial ONLY IF YOU DID NOT SIGN AN ARBITRATION AGREEMENT. I repeat if you signed an arbitration agreement, were denied warranty work due to a mod, and wish to persue it legally YOU WILL LOSE. The system is designed to make you lose. I've just gone through this. Trust me. If you try to prosecute you will be forced into arbitration. Arbitration is a form you sign that gives up your right to a proper trial. Arbitration is designed so that 90% of cases won are in favor of the company. Arbitration DOES NOT care what the law says, only what is "right". after you lose arbitration you will be able to sue as you wish, and you stand a good chance of winning. However, before you can get through arbitration you must pay all of the costs, even for the other party. In my case this totaled over $3000 for just my fees. This process is designed to keep you from pushing the issue. For the $3000 in fees I'd have to pay I can repair/replace/rebuild whatever is damaged on my vehicle and then I still would have to go to court and risk not winning there.
bottom line:
Be nice to your service department, get to know everyone on a first name basis. Let them know what you want to do to your car i.e. intake, exhaust, cams etc. see what they say. Some dealers are great. My ford dealer wouldn't have a problem if I stuffed a different engine in my car as long as it was a ford! Before going out and doing something, run it by them to get a feel for what they say. If they seem unwilling, try another dealership. Also, never call. Go in person, show them the car, show them how you take car of it and everything is in good working order, get your oil changed there....even if it doesnt need it. Build a report with the dealer then bring them a box of doughnuts and ask about the intake. you stand a much better chance of getting your way.

I was told that if you buy mazda parts and have them installed by the dealer, it will be covered under the factory warranty. Not sure how true this is, but it's something to look into if adding parts.
