Wow, not buying a car based off the paint seems pretty rediculous to me. I am in the car..oh, I don't know, 99.99% of the time I am near it so the paint doesn't aggravate me. Now, the time I do spend with the car is pretty damn amazing.
That's like not buying a car because it doesn't have enough cup holders.
I will pass on running for congress.
I care about how a car looks as well as how it performs. The people that I told not to buy the car are just like me. If you were looking for a new car and somebody told you that the paint was of poor quality, would that kind of information would not affect your decision? It would have affected mine.
I guess I don't think the paint is as horrible as you mentioned. I have 12k on mine and on the first day of ownership, I drove it from Philly to Tampa. After 16 hours straight on the highway, I got one rock chip and right now, I only have two.
Is the paint thin? Sure, but not a deal breaker IMO.
Everything is a compromise. When I weighed the pros/cons vs price, I thought it a no brainer. So far, this car has been rock solid for me

Well that's how a rational person would think but......
I am a rational person. I am also a consumer that is tired of half assed products being released. I don't believe in cutting corners. I am tired of people saying I am getting what I paid for. Personally, I am not getting what I paid for. I bought a car that performs well and looks good. Well it is starting to fail in the looks department. I'm sorry that my attention to detail borders on anal retentive. That is how I am. I have come to expect a lot out of a car since my first car. I am that person that knows every inch of his vehicles. This attention to detail has served me well in the past. For example, on my last car, I had new tires put on. I noticed right before I got into the car that there were deep scratches in the finish of the wheels that were not in there before hand. I got 3 new wheels out of it. Why? Because the place I bought the tires from believes in satisfying the customer. Did they want to spend $900? No they didn't. But they did just to satisfy me and keep me as a customer. I was impressed when the man working on my car came out and personally apologized. To this day, I tell people to go there just because of that.
Thanks to those that understand. To those that think I am nuts or irrational, well sorry sheeple, I just fed up with being screwed as a customer. If I have offended anyone with my statements, I apologize.
I am going to get off of my soap box now and wait and see what happens.

You got what you paid for, no doubt about that. If you're unhappy because the paint isn't lexus quality, then you bought the wrong car. If they see enough demand for this car, then maybe they'll improve the paint and the up the price accordingly or cut somewhere else and keep it affordable. You're looking at just one thing, and ignoring all the other extras that come with the car for peanuts.
Rock chips are inevitable no matter how good the paint is but some cars are worse than others. I don't like how my white car has black primer so whenever I get a chip a black spot shows up. On Nobel's they use similar color primer to what color paint is going to be on the car. I know that's an expensive thing to do but they could have a black primer on dark cars and gray/white primer on lighter color cars for example.
When I went to buy my MS3 they had a used one in the showroom, I commented to the salesmen about the massive amounts of chips in the front. There was no denying the thin paint and lots of rock chips thats why my salesmen gave me the number of a company to put a clear bra on the front. I think he'd heard the thin paint thing once or twice before, maybe thats why Mazda has been sending people free touch up paint? The chips don't bother everyone but to those of us who they bug the hell out of I think Mazda could possibly do an in house paint protection instead of sending us out to find our own spending even more money on a brand new car.
Of course yesterday I got a small chip 2" above where my clear bra ends...

I feel as though I got what I paid for and I can explain why. I bought a new 03 VW GTi 1.8t at 23.5k OTD. The interior was as nice or better than anything in it's bracket. The paint was very very thick and even up to when I sold it, I could make that puppy shine and look like new. Did it have reliability issues? Sure, there were a couple of things that really pissed me off. Was it very quick? No. It was fast enough to have some fun in but ultimately, I felt as though I got a good deal because much attention was paid to the comfort bits of the car and no soo much to the power.
In this car (MS3), not only was attention paid to the comfort bits, I got features that I never expected such as the HID lights, automatic climate control, rain sensing wipers (things my GTi never had) along with a LOT more power and better handling. Have I had any reliability issues? No, but it's very possible that it's just too soon to tell. I paid 25.3k OTD for my current car and I even got the extended warranty. For 2k more five years later, I got a much better car (IMO) than the GTi and more features.
I am measuring my "good deal" based off what other companies are offering in terms of power, comfort, reliability and looks. For the money, the MS3 simply trumps anything near it. I could use all sorts of fun analogies to explain myself further but simply put, no car is going to EVER give you everything you have ever wanted in a vehicle AND be dirt cheap.
Oh, and for the record, I am extremely meticulous with my car as well but as I have found out with girls I have dated, you can't always have your cake and eat it too.......just every once in a while

I agree with all of you... to offer all this car at this price cost needs to be managed ..... however my initial pain was I thought I was the only one. I didnt' know. I was offered the clear urethane bra but it was cashola and I didn't think was worth it based on all my other cars .... maybe I didn't do enough homework but you could say I was distracted by the cars performance just a little can you blame me. My old VW ya wasn't quick but looked great and held up to the environment. When I'm driving my MS3 I'm not thinking about my chips... however when I'm washing my car I go "oh $*$#&#&#@## look at this another one!!!"

Nope. I would say I got what I paid for if I had acquired the same amount of chips over a 5 year period. The amount that I have acquired is unacceptable no matter how much somebody pays for a vehicle.

Where did you buy your car? What did they have to say about it?
Lancaster Toyota Mazda Scion. They were no help whatsoever. Which doesn't surprise me due to past issues I have had with them just to get basic service done to the car. They are blaming me for all of the chips. Let's just say, I no longer do business with them.

Most people drive "within" the "paint-chipping" zone on freeways (below x-amount of distance per hwy mph). I'm sure if everyone drove outside of this range paint chips would severly be decreased.
lol...problem is anytime you let a big gap between you and the car in front of you- you'll have cars from other lanes mosey on in closing that gap yet again.

+1. no matter where i'm going, i keep paint chips in mind. it's inevitable but they can be reduced. just try and keep a good distance between other cars when at all possible. i actually got a really big chip just above my fog light from a big rock. just do the best you can, that's all you can do. i do only have 2 tiny chips on my hood though. i have probably about 4 on my bumper that are through the paint. a couple that just smashed the paint. i also have a couple on my rear driver door... wtf?
I have been doing that. I have been doing that since I got pulled over a year after I started driving back in 1995. A nice cop tought me a lesson by letting me go with a warning.
