Mazda's MZR Motor. Awesome link.

Looking at this picture I see some interesting things:

A) Look at the studs where the DP attaches to the turbo. See how they have a "notch" in the middle. IIRC Driver311 and others have mentioned breaking the bolts while swapping DP. I see how that would happen.

B) Look under the intercooler, on the left hand side. There is a black hook that is used to hoist (lift) the engine. This means the intercooler is installed after the engine is in the car. There is your reason why Bravnik and some other members have loose IC/intake clamps.

C) Look at the pistons skirts. They are coated with "anti-friction coating".


I have two questions:
1) What the hell is that bolt in the middle of the exhaust manifold?

2) Why two hoses running to the wastegate?

The mysterious bolt could be plugging a hole for an EGT sensor? Possibly used for diagnostics? I know whenever I see a bung like that it is generally for an O2 sensor or EGT sensor.

the real studs do not have the grooves in them, they actually have a thicker spot there on the real ones.

Yes the intercooler would be installed after the engine just for ease of installation.

there actually aren't any bolts in the factory manifold.

the hoses are for the factory boost controller.
 
why would those grooves be there on the bolt for the downpipe?

Why would the cams be any harder to change than on any other car?

Is the balance shaft delete a popular modification in the MS3 community too? Looks like the MZR has the same crank design with the flywheel on the crank to spin the balance shaft. On the D23 engines, Cosworth and a few other manufacturers make a balance shaft delete kit. Also, individuals have replaced the crank with the have flywheel assembly with a Ranger crank.

when i had a honda h22a-1 motor the cams were literally right there. from the pic it seems like you need to pull the head to get to them. i could be wrong. not that theres really any need to but just a stupid sight i guess.

Typically when bolts are slimmed down like that it's to allow some amount of bolt stretch, which occurs as torque is applied to the bolt and allows the desired amount of clamping load on the joint to be reached.

Now, why the bolt isn't slimmed down in reality, and actually has extra material added there as redrocketz said, I have no idea. (dunno) Maybe it's similar to the round donut gasket in the stock CBE? Could allow a good seat/seal to be made at the downpipe interface. <-- Pure speculation :)

all you do is pull off the intercooler and then the valve cover. I removed a set the other day to get sent off for testing.
