Mazda5 Rear end clunk issues

I know the 5 had suspension clunking issues from my first 2007. My 2006 is pretty noisy out back and wanted to double check the usual suspects. If I recall the sway bar mount bushings and possibly end links can cause this. I replaced the rear shocks a couple of years ago and those feel fine currently but know those can also contribute.

Am I on target?

Without knowing any other details, when ever somebody mentions rear end clunking, the immediate “go-to” is the shock mounts.

Notorious for breaking, via snapping at the lug ears which bolt to the car. It is a LOUD and obvious clunk, not typically very subtle.

Super easy to check without disassembly of anything. Plus, you can just reach in, and try wiggling the shock, you’ll immediately know if you found the problem. Good news is they’re super cheap, and remarkably straightforward to change. Do both sides while you’re at it because it’s only a matter of time…
