Mazda5 competition brewing?

2007 Mazda5
Check this out --> http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.efe0c77/0 Particularly post #6. Contrary to my belief, there appears to be tons of competition brewing from our Japanese neighbors in the next year or two. Kia has always been junk IMO and Honda has lost my trust in quality these past few years. Toyota would be the only one of the bunch I'd consider over the Mazda5, but I'm a little doubtful that they'd find room in their line up for this next to the Matrix. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if they do... I mean, look at Toyota's SUV line up. There's plenty of overlapping of similar features and specs between them. That being said, I've ordered a Mazda5 already, and plan to stay loyal regardless of what comes out. Mazda's the one with the balls to do it first in North America, so I'll give them my business. :)

So what do you guys think? Are any of these actually on the radar for production in North America or is it all rumor? The Latitude, it seems, has been rumored for several years now and we're still waiting? It seems like Mazda's confident others will join in the micro-van market as even in their brochures the throw out lines like "It's crazy how much sense this makes." or especially "Remember you've seen it here[Mazda] first." Now that Mazda has proven the micro-van can actually sell here (and especially with insane gas prices), perhaps other big dogs are finally planning to try a hand in it too?

This space-wagon class of vheicle is nothing new. This class of vehicle is especially popular in Europe, and many manufacturers, have entries in this vehicle class.

Mazda, based on many business & market factors has chosen to bring a vehicle of this class into N. America at this time.

Mazda's not the first to enter into this category, remember the Nissan Axxess of the early 90's? If the Mazda5 becomes a hit, it'll be very easy for other manufacturers to enter vehicles into the N. American market.

On the other hand, if the Mazda5 doesn't become a hit, then the other manufacturers won't bother and the Mazda5 itself will likely die after a few model years, just like the Nissan Axxess.

Manufacturers are keeping a very close eye on how the Mazda5 is doing in N. America.

Exactly. The fact that the Mazda5 has been a glowing success so far in N. America this time around has got to make one think the rest will jump on the bandwagon here pretty soon.

I found the Honda, and bleck... it's got 4 normally opening doors, none sliding. Granted this is how the old Odyssey and Premacy used to be, but regardless, the Honda's still ugly for some reason.

Honda Stream (rebadged as Latitude if in N. America)

Yeah, that Honda just doesn't have the same sexy look of the 5. I really don't mind being the only owner of a space wagon on my block, lol.

"Space Wagon" - Kinda funny how I'm sure this name came about because there's a lot of interior space, and it's a wagon. But also, you hear a lot of people say the Mazda5 looks like some type of futuristic space ship thing... I kinda think it does too!

I have a question regarding bad cylinder coils on 2004 MPV's. Does anybody know the right forum and thread?

The Kia carens is gonna be nice. The newer kias are really stepping it up.

Yeah... not too bad. The Mz5 is more mini-minivan. This reminds me more of a Toyota Highlander.

I dunno, I think I'm becoming more trusting of Hyundai with the new Tiburons and Sonatas. Maybe Kia will eventually follow suit.

I used to have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra and traded it in last year for a 2005 Elantra GT. Quality and reliability have come a long way in the past 5 years. I'm sure Kia will catch up.

I had a Nissan Axxess until I won a 4-Runner at a ballgame. Now I have a 5. The Axxess was not bad, but had far less interior space than the five -- the cargo space behind the second row of seats was actually kind of small. Consumer Reports gave it an unacceptable rating because, if I remember correctly, they felt it might roll over. I would imagine that the car failed not because it was a space wagon but because it just wasn't good enough.

And Nissan could market this car:

taking this Renault and rebadge it as a Nissan PV (people Mover)
Ha... just as I read your post, Nissan's new commercial about "Shift_2.0" came on (all the new/updated models coming out)

Anyways, what I was gonna say is that's a nice looking car. Definately has Honda Fit styling written all over it, albeit, larger. And for some reason, I actually think the Fit is pretty sexy(naughty)

I saw a reference to the Toyota Ace in the paper today, this appears to be Toyota's entry into this category.

There's not much out on it other than it will be made in 2008 (not clear whether it would be an '08 or '09 model year vehicle), it's a crossover, smaller than a Dodge Magnum, and has three rows of seats with the last row folding flat for more storage.

I welcome the competition. We love our 5, but there's room for improvement. I've always liked Hondas, have owned three of them in the past, and yet their recent US products leave me cold because they've gone totally mainstream and boring. No more hatches, no more wagons, nothing innovative until the new Civic came out...but of course they don't bring the 5 door to the US.

These mini-MPVs are all over the rest of the world. In Europe Honda sells both the FR-V, which has 3+3 seating (as the Fiat Multipla), and the Stream, which has the 2+2+2 similar to what the Mazda5 has. CAR magazine several months ago compared a group of mini-MPVs and to my surprise, they actually picked the Mazda5 as the winner. Unfortunately I recycled that copy of CAR well before we decided we would buy a 5. I'm kicking myself over that one.

The 5 is by a longshot the best looking space-wagon.

Kia is going to get MUCH MUCH better. Just look at hyundai. They have really come a long way.
