Mazda3 Gas Type

I purchased my 2008 Mazda3 new and have been using mid-grade gas recommended by a mechanic. I did some research and this may have not been a good idea. Has anyone seen any issues with using 89 instead of 87? Can this cause damage to the engine?

I don't see why it would cause damage but there is no reason to use higher octane levels unless the manual tells you to. It does not increase performance. Higher compression engines require higher octane rated fuel to prevent detonation.

Yup, no need to use higher octane gas as you don't have a high compression engine. The only exception to this would be that some companies put additional cleaners into their higher octane gases that could help keep the fuel system clean, however most all 87 gas will have plenty already so no real worries.

i have a 2008 3 as well, i've been using 87 for the last 2 years (mostly chevron) and have never had a problem with the engine
