Mazda3 Batery Box

I just bought a used 2006 Mazda3 S Hatchback. It's in excellent condition, however, the battery box cover is missing. What exactly is it for anyway? I've owned several vehicles, but I've never had or seen one that has a vent and box around the battery. Do I really need it? I found a cover on eBay for $20 and I was wondering if it would be worth buying.

the battery box/duct helps keep the battery cool and extend battery life... it's worth having!

The original cover probably broke. Mine broke the first time I opened it to jump start a friend. Cheap plastic, which is annoying.

Indeed. One should be extremely careful when undoing the clips or the ends could snap off.
