Mazda Speed Protege Vs. Vw GTI 1.8 Turbo?

I'm surprised to hear that. I've never heard of a blown engine on a VW with only 305whp. Other issues, yes and more hp blowing engines, yes, but not at 305whp. Must be a fluke. Some of the VWs end up being lemons, but if you do get a good one, it'll run hard and well. If you ever get time, you should search the vwvortex forums and read around to see what those guys are doing to their cars. They're pretty sweet.

i beleive he means "blown" in the sense that the motor is heavily modified, not like it blew up

On this forum, a blown engine is a motor with some kind of hole in it and a pool of oil underneath!! :D

lol ya i meant it was a nice car not that it was broken.

there are alot of ways to keep a motor together, you just need to know what you are doing. I believe 20psi with the stock intercooler and pipes could last with race fuel since the cances of detonation are so much lower and with a catless 3" turboback he was able to get the heat out quickly. the amount of power and load put onto the motor with 20psi untuned running rich as hell with the IC and turbo out of efficiency is nothing like the strain a properly intercooled 20psi would be putting on the rods since it would be making soo much more power. At 14psi tekkie was putting 255WHP on his stock motor. Joe P was making 8more HP using 5psi more boost and yes everything was out of range but with the race fuel it wasnt a problem so it worked. could you do that on 91 octane? hell no. if you wanna do that you need a methenol injection kit on the side.

Impressive...but I'd be afraid to try it with my own car. I haven't seen a lot, but I have a seen a few guys on here go through their pistons running higher boost.

Wow this thread definitely went in a few different directions. I have an almost stock 03.5 MSP (Magnaflow exhaust only) & raced a 97/98 GTI (VR6) that was chipped just a few months ago. He pulled up on me quickly but I still managed to fend him off. Regardless of my MSP's hard pull through each gear, don't underestimate the older GTIs. I think a moderately modified VR6 could beat up on us a little bit (but then it is a V6 & its powerband is quite different than the 1.8T anyway, as well as the older ones being lighter than the new ones). Anyway, that was my 2 cents. :P

i beat one already... ppl from school are dying to race me, my friend in a silver special edition gti " BBS Wheels " challenged me and i accepted...

walked on him on every gear... his car is not only heavier than an msp, it has a smaller engine and turbo... so, power to weight kinda killed him...

it may be heavier but not by alot, and displacement means nothing, it runs far more boost which helps it put out more power and torque than the msp. Gearing can make alot of difference also. I think the gti is just as fast with equal drivers

msp if the gti doesn't have the chip
heavy modify msp vs heavy modify gti i will say the msp!!

Heavily modded gti's have insane amounts of power. for 2400 bucks you can be running a bigger turbo at much higher boost reliably because the stock internals are strong. I can't say that about the msp.give each the same amount of money for mods, the gti will be faster.

beat one at a light... some kid rolls up and says nice Prote gay... and i whooped him... next light he took a left...

awesome!

Yeah so i met up with this chick, by appointment through friends, with an 02 jetta with cat-back exh, intake, chip (spikes to 22psi, holds 20psi), and guess what happened from 40mph? Walked on her so hard, it was funny she had my friends call me to race her. But it was fun!!!!! So lesson learned- higher boost doesn't mean anything compared to efficient boost.....

You made an appointment to race and only went once from 40? Those VW turbos aren't all that great on the top end. Not calling you out or anything, but I'd be curious how any other races went.
