Hi I recently joined the forum to learn about the RX7 tt. I will be in the market for a car and was considering a RX7 tt. However I have heard an array of things about the car and its motor from various people. Some say it is reliable whereas others say it is highly unreliable.

I was wondering what some of the advantages and disadvantages you all have found with the car? Also how much does it cost to modify them ... is it reasonable or expensive? How reliable are the cars? Also how much would it cost to convert the car to a single.

Basically I just want to hear what your all experiences have been with these cars.

cant answer all you questions, but they are reliable in the sense that they need alot of minor work often

i have had 3 rx7's and all were pretty reliable, but they are not cheap cars to own at all

my last rx7 got about 15mpg at most

Be ready to spend some serious money if you want it to be reliable. You'll have to rebuild and inspect the engine,turbo's, etc. It is nearly impossible to find one run running , in good condition.

A friend has a 3rd Gen and he has already spent damn near $8-$10,000 dollars
on rebuilding the engine and random other s***. Plus the cost of the car was $12,000 so it get's really expensive. He also added the full TEIN suspension ,FMIC,Hks Bov, so his car is runnin good. He runs it now at 17psi all day with HOME DEPOT made Boost controller and it's fast. My other friend has a 2nd Gen which will cost you not even close to as much money as youll spend on a 3rd Gen. He's running 15psi and it's fast too. But those boost levels are not safe so they are gambling.

just get a NA FC (2nd gen) the motors make 160 to the crank and rev to 8k rpm. with nice exhaust/header/intake/no ps/ac/ electric fans/advanced timing and SAFC my buddy made quite a fun car out of his 90 NA GXL-SE. it dyno'ed at 171whp 122 ft lbs. he was planning on a street port or periphial (sp?) port job and that would have put him in some nice power range. he instead bought a TII motor and since installation he has lost intrest in the car (says its no longer fun ike it used to be NA) and now it sits on stands in his drive way.

Turbo-Reliable until higher boost pressures are reached, Adequate cooling a must. Twin Turbo's are more prone than singles
N/A-Extremely reliable, responds well to mods. Don't ever expect to get over 200whp unless you add another rotor or you drop money on a bridge port or peripheral port and extensive tuning.

yea well I definately wanted to get the tt model if i get any model at all. The cars I am deciding between are the RX7, 300ZXtt and a few others. My one friend has a T04R turbo in his supra and says he absolutely loves the turbo so i would consider putting this into the RX7 I get. Is there anything you can do on the tt models to help with the overheating problems that they have?

well, neither the rx-7 nor the ZX are cheap cars to modify, nissan crammed that motor in there so tight that doing any work to the engine is a big project. theyre both gorgeous cars and i think youll be doing just fine with either one of those bad boys

if you want "cheap supra like" power then get an old F-body or 5.0 mustang if all you want is power in a straight line. they will net WAY bigger gains and at half the money. plus all the parts you want are in the country and cheap. if you want a well put together car that doesnt require constant maitanence then neither the TII or the ZX r for you. honestly the coolest RX-7s are all NA. RE AMEMIYA's FD (3 rotor na!!) and too much power kinda kills the spirit of the car IMHO. also the ZX is about good for nothing. it cant auto x, cant really drag race(too heavy and competition too pletiful), and drifting one is a joke. is this your first import car?

yes i am actually a senior in high school and will be gettin the car next year when i am in college ... i will be spending around 15-20 on the car ... i to have heard of how hard the 300s are to work on as well as their heavy weight and overheating issues ... when i originally said cheap i just was wondering if the parts were cheaper or more expensive ... i have no problem putting out the money for the car and will have a job to support that ... definately leaning more towards the RX7 ...

Yea my friend does have a 3rd Gen Rx7 and there are overheating problems.

I don't think that he's let it overheat, but on his gauge there is a huge difference since he got the FMIC installed. Before it would stay alot cooler because he had no Front Mount. Now that the front mount blocks the radiator, he said temps. get alot higher. He has the gauge to prove it but I don't remember the actual temps. he stated.

the other way to go if youre looking for something fairly cheap is a nissan 240...its kind of a bandwagon trendy car right now cuz of drifting, but you can put together a hell of a driving machine (without all the cosmetic bells and whistles) for not alot of money, you dont even HAVE to get an SR20, cuz there are a bunch of companies making turbo kits for the stock K engines

Unless you have very deep pockets, 3 gen RX7's are not something a college kid should buy.

haha idk about the SRT-4 ... alot of people have them up where my friends street race but i didnt think they had to much potential, obviously there quick cars stock but it doesnt seem like you can do as much to them as u could a RX-7 ... and plus they're basically a neon

does anyone know how much more reliable the RX7's are once they get the single in? I was wondering how much this would cost too if any of you have any friends with a single in it .. how much do they like it?
