Mazda reliability

Quote from same story.

"Mazda is hot on the tail of the three Toyota brands, and its improvement is buoyed by the predicted-reliability score for the new 2013 Mazda CX-5 SUV, which is much better than average."

That seems like pretty high praise from CR since they keep new models out of the mix for predicability ratings because they don't have any survey info. They must have liked what they saw when they tested it, even though they rated the CR-V higher.

My Lexus and Mazda are 2 most reliable vehicles that I've owned in last decade. Good job Mazda, per CR.

to think some people might get the Ford Escape
Ford was rated 27 out of 28
yikes!

I could never figure out why Mazda was lower in the ratings before. There were several brands of cars I avoided when shopping because of knowing people that had problems with them and when I'd look at the ratings Mazda used to be right in with them.
I'm always curious how much people's perception of reliability works into the ratings. I've known people with cars that had problems fairly often but just loved their car and considered it well built and other people who have had cars that were great but one little thing here or there and they think the car is terrible.
If someone buys a car mostly because of the reliability rating it might be hard to admit later that it has a few issues, whereas people that buy Mazdas because of the way they drive and feel might be more willing to say "I love this car, but...."
A lot of the brand new cars we test drove didn't feel as sound and solid as our Mazda3 does after a year of driving it.

Received my copy of CR today which includes tables of their most reliable vehicles for each type. This was not included in the linked story above. CX-5 is #1 for Small SUV's. CR-V was about midway down. New Escape was not included (too new).

OK, this is where I throw an e-granade over the fence. CR is not a publication I put a lot of stock in when it comes to auto testing and rating. They've made too many mistakes over the years and their testing methodologies have been criticized often. And just how is it they can forecast superior reliability of a vehicle like the CX-5 that has only been out a few months? It's not that I ignore their opinions completely; but they're just one data point among many.

My feelings are same^ regarding CU. Mainly I use their detailed reliability data by model, little else auto-wise.

I did successfully select a good range hood based on CR review...

I agree that it is impossible to surmise reliability in such a short time on the market.
I have had my CX-5 since March, and it now has over 11,000 trouble-free miles.
However, I'm dropping it off today at the dealer for warranty service (heh).
My MS6 has also treated me well (lucky, I guess), but the model overall missed the mark on reliability, IMO, based on what I have seen from 6 years of forum (not this one) membership.
Some of these problems carried over into the CX-7 and MS3 as well, as they shared the same 2.3 MZR DISI engine...
