Mazda Protege 5 - Terrible Tires!

Agreed, I don't think there is a single protege still on stock Dunlop.

And 2006? You need to check before posting in the future... The OP could be dead and in the ground...

Hah, Brian I still have a set of Stock wheels in storage with about 20% tread left...bought them as a spare set (the wheels) and never used them!

LOL. I still use the stock Dunlops. I hand sipe them and they are fine in rain, Good enough in WI winters.
Haven't tried straight summer tires, but the Dunlops are the Best Cornering all seasons I've ever used.
Car corners like a go-cart.

"The Stock Dunlops" as in the exact model that came on the car was only available at the Dealer...

So I find that hard to believe unless you bought them used...

Purchased P5 new; mine came w/ Dunlop SP5000 195/50R16. Although I tried some Kumho's yrs back, I've been buying the Dunlops for yrs from different sources, Tires Plus, Sam's Clup spec order, private tire shops, etc. Sometimes 4, sometimes only two for front, right before winter. Dunlop stopped making them in that size just this last fall, so now can't get them anywhere except whomever has leftover stock.

If the OE tire was an SP5000, then those were available online...I found several old listings in the OE size, though they don't make them in that size anymore. Actually, a few years back, I had SP5000's in 16" on another car. Current listings only show 17" and up.

And for anyone else who finds this...don't EVER buy tires from a dealer. Matter of fact, I'm sick and tired of teaching factory technicians at dealerships how to work on my cars; I wouldn't go to a dealer for anything unless absolutely necessary.

The last time I brought my car in the the dealer for brakes, they overtorqued my alloys on the winter beater so much that I needed a 1.5 Meter bar attached to the powerbar. What a s*** Show! :(

Dealers can go to hell. I know for a fact that my local Mazda dealer intentionally screw up cars in the shop and charges people for it

I've got a good dealer story for ya!

My buddy had an 04 RX8...started acting funny. Low on power, had it into several shops but no one could find the exact problem until he found a rotary specialist who checked the compression...it was below minimum spec. The car had around 50k miles on it and was all stock. It was also an automatic so it's not like it was beat on.

He then went to the local Mazda dealer - because there were many stories online about how Mazda was replacing the early engines at no cost to the owner. He went in 3 TIMES, and they tried to tell him compression was fine and refused to replace the engine.

Fast forward...he trades the RX8 in to a different dealer (he bought a Kia Forte Koup) and the RX8 goes to auction. A mutual friend ends up buying the car at an auction (for $1500) and when we found out, we told him about the low compression. He took it into a different dealer and they replaced it with a brand new crate engine at no cost.

WTF?!?! My buddy wasn't too pissed about it though because of all the issues it had given him, and it was bad on gas and he had a long commute. But still - you would think dealers are held to some common standard. Apparently not.

Bob King owns our Mazda, Kia, and Hyundai. I've got too many stories. Anywhere from 1.5 hr oil changes where they come back with a list of "problems" to my mother-in-law's Sante Fe getting her spark plugs changed and some how oil got into the spark plug wells and they charged her for it.

My biggest issue is with my 2004 Mazda3 2.3L. I have the first generation, first year, all the problems. A/C doesn't work for crap, the engine bay consists of plastic and 3.5 million sensors. My intake Manifold is run off an electronic motor instead of good ole cable. According to the "dealership" 2.3L engines have a carbon buildup problem in the intake manifold. However, this isn't recall worthy. I originally went in there because my car started stalling and idling erratically after fueling up. The dealer ship said I had a fuel injector stuck open and fixed it for something like $400-500 (mind you, I was pretty ignorant to cars back then...not that I'm not now lol). The car stalled leaving the lot feeling even worse. Lucky for them, I got the car from the shop when they closed. After coming back and reporting problems, they said it had nothing to do with them and tried running me off. Their only recommendation was their $500 fuel treatment service, go figure. From what they made out, they biggest issue was carbon buildup in the intake manifold. I got lucas cleaner, opened the butterfly valve and sprayed it in there. It barely helped. I took my car to a local shop, had them take it apart and blast it clean. It help a small bit. I still have issues with this car and have put less that 2k miles on it in the last 2 years. I hate my dealership because I know they intentionally broke it. I stand behind this accusation knowing a former employee of the Bob King Mazda garage who confirmed they do this.

Thread is about tires so we really should start new one. That said, I called mazda once complaining of dealer. They said dealerships are privatly owned and Mazda has no quality standards that have to be met. Just showroom rules; some locations can't display different brands along w/ Mazda.

this dealership keeps Mazda and Hyundai together, has a Kia around the street and a Mitsubishi down the other street. My Mazda3 also has the 6-disc BOSE system. Something went wrong while changing a cd and it f'ed up. I called Mazda and for some reason they gave me a $500 Mazda gift card good at any dealer. I ordered a replacement unit from Mazda, new was over $1,000, used was $500 exactly. I paid the $35 for tax out of pocket, and then the $100 for install. I've told other people about the gift card and no one else has been able to get one.

This thread is also 6 years old. I don't think it matters too much. ;)
