Mazda Protege 1.6l Auto Transmission might be gone!

Ahhh okay well this saturday i will be dropping my tranny pan and everything if i get stuck ill post up some pics (:

Updated !

Okay updated sorry this took pretty long lol.

Well today was the day i decided to drop the pan so which i did (all by myself) (nana)

But i thank you jcovelli sooo much for helping me with everything man i couldnt of done it without you !!!

Well when i dropped my pan my tranny fluid was BLACK and smelled like s*** ! went to autozone and bought a new filter and gasket.

Now my dad got me this type of tranny fluid brand (Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle Automatic transmission fluid).. Is that any good ? or should i go with another brand ? I want to get the best out of the tranny so yehh so what you guys think ?

Oh one more thing. when i put on the new gasket do i use any type of sealant ? or do i just put it on the pan and screw it back on ?

atx proteges need Mercon V (type M-V) or Dexron III. i believe that castrol import is compatible. it should say on the container. yeah black is... not good. dump whats in the trans pan then top off with new. then drive 2-3000 miles than dump the pan and top off again. that should get rid of the majority of the bad fluid. the trans hold around 7 quarts but the pan only holds about 4, that's why you should change it twice. so i take it you're just hoping changing the fluid will sort out the solenoid problem? it could very well if your fluid was black lol. good luck.

you do not need any sealant around the gasket

Well it didnt fix my solenoid problem :/ now my car is just not even catching 3rd gear..

If the fluid was in that bad a condition, you may be SOL. I'd think you could change the solenoids yourself by dropping the valve body but I'm not familiar enough with this transmission to be sure.

If you're really wanting to try everything before doing anything more in-depth, buy a couple bottles of this:

Drain the fluid a bit to prevent overfilling, put a bottle in and drive it around as much as possible. Results may take up to a few hundred miles but I've heard some miracle stories about this stuff from people who I trust with trannys in bad condition. If it does help at all, drain the fluid in about 1k miles and refill along with another bottle. Failing that however, mechanical work is in order.

FYI, changing the fluid on a regular basis probably would have prevented this. Learn from your mistake and don't go any longer than 30k before changing your fluid. Drain and refills every 10-15k would be well enough until about 100k when you should drop the pan and change the filter.

FYI to everyone else; Mazda M-V is NOT NOT NOT equivalent to Mercon V. Some have used Mercon V without issue but its not ideal. M-V is equivalent to Dexron-III, and Mercon V does NOT back-spec to Dexron III. Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle does but IMO, is a bit of a waste of money. It works beautifully for where Toyota T-IV and the like is spec'd though. For M-V, any "Dex-Merc" will be fine unless you want to go the extra mile and get a synthetic fluid.

I have a 99 protege. it does not want to go into first gear.. once it does it runs great but I have to rev the engine for a bit or wait with it in drive for a minute or so and it shifts hard into gear and occasionally turns on the OD light..
any suggestions would be much appreciated

You ever find out your the problem? I have an automatic 2001 Protege with a 0733 code. I'm having problems with 1st though. Car takes a bit to get into first in the morning. When it does engage, it's a hard jerk. Then the car jerks occasionally when coming to a stop or pulls out of 1st . I have to drop it down to D1, to slightly rev it into gear.
