Mazda Is sending a Special Tech....

Alot of you guys have read my posts about all of the problems with my car. Well this is an update on the whole issue.

I sent a letter (3 pages) completely outlining all of the problems that I have had both with my car and with the dealership that I bought the car at and have it serviced at. I included copies of the service invoices and made my intentions known that I was seeking a refund for the full price of my car as per North Carolina Lemon Law. This letter was sent Certified Mail to Mazda of North America Consumer Compliance.

I just received my verification from the certified mail that Mazda received the letter and the same day I received a phone call from Mazda Consumer Compliance. They said that they are sending a Special Technicain to Harrelson Mazda to make one final attempt at fixing my car. I have an appointment for Jan. 28 at 11am. I will actually be out of the country when this happens so I am leaving my car with them the entire time that I am gone. This way they have no excuses as to not having some sort of resolution for me by the time I get back. I had hoped that this could all be finished before the end of the year but no such luck. They said that this guy is more than a master tech and all that he does is travel the country fixing problems that the dealers have been unable to fix. We will have to wait and see what happens with that. But this is just to let everyone else out there know that writing letters and making phone calls and YES EVEN POSTING ON THESE boards helps in getting issues with your car resolved. Some of you guys with the clunk issue may need to dig out the old pen and paper and write Consumer Compliance.

Well looks like I have about a month to go before any resolution and I made Mazda Corporate aware that unless my car throws another CEL between now and then or unless it just becomes undriveable that I would not be taking it back to harrelson until the Special Tech gets there. I am still having problems but I am not going to let the dealership have the opportunity to cover it's mistakes. The idle still fluctuates between 100 and 500. Sometimes going higher. Hasn't cut off on me again but... has come close. I explained to them that right now it does not happen every time I drive the car but that it does happen everyday and is always worse when the weather is colder. Reallly is annoying sitting in traffic with your foot on the clutch feeling all of the vibrations from the engine idle fluctuating. Oh yeah and my gas mileage has gone from around 350 a tank to about 260-270 with no change in driving.:wtf:

Will let you guys know what happens after the 28th or if anything else comes up. But just to say again... Mazda does hear and see all of our complaints. Sometimes you just have to clear your proverbial throat and make your voice stand out to get any resolution. Important to note that when one person or place provided no answer I went elsewhere meaning higher up the chain. the dealership messed with me so I went to mazda corporate and when I still had problems I posted on this site and when I still had problems I wrote a letter and this whole time I have been making phone calls. Oh yeah one other thing that is important is that Mazda keeps good records. they know when your dealer has contacted them concerning a car problem and when you have contacted them for a car problem in addition to all of the history of service and everything on your car. Well just thought that was all worth noting. Sorry the post was so long but just wanted to keep everyone up to date and maybe provide a little hope to those out there with unresolved problems.

I'm glad to hear that mazda's is actually getting off there a$$es and fixing your problem.....please keep the board informed as to what is currently happening....unfortunately we don't have lemon laws in canada so my mp3 clunk problem will probably never be fixed....also, how many kms have you put on your car?

I have had idle fluctuations since the first day the temp dropped below 30. They tried to fix it 2 times by adjusting the base idle and clearing the computer. They all told me the car was running perfect. 2 days later At 3000 miles they replaced the IAC Valve. They told me at that time that my car had been messed up since I bought it. The car has since been back twice for the same problem with the idle. At one point the car was actually dropping rpms so bad it shut off on me a couple of times.

Combine all of these problems with more than poor service from the dealer. Denying a loaner car and just being plain old morons. They tried blaming the problem on the gas at one point and told me that if I put anything in the car other than 87 that it will be screwed up. Totally bogus claim. I could go on and on but I have beat this thing into the ground. Try searching for Strange Idle.... Possible Clicking Sound Related , or try Bend Over Mazda. I went into alot more detail in those threads. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Mazdas official stance is that they have not had this problem with any other car. So we will see.

I read your many words and several times you mention "all of the problems with my car". I agree that it is most frustrating to have intermittent problems that are difficult to fix, but you have decribed one problem , specifically idle speed variation that sometimes gets to point of stalling the car. Having said that, I agree that 4 times is about 3 too many to be going to the dealer for the same problem, but hopefully with some better technical skills that they are sending, they will now be able to isolate/fix the problem, and restore your confidence...

i too have the idle problem with my car. sometimes i will be driving just normal driving and i will get on it for a little mostly just to pass slow traffic and then go back to normal driving then when i stop at the light the car starts idling like at 150-200 rpms, it has never shut off on me but it is annoying cause i press the gas in neutral because im afraid its going to shut off then eventually it goes away, but still comes back every so often took it to dealer with a couple of problems and they never fixed it but it wasnt there for awhile and it just came back today driving to work in the morning. i sometimes hate this car but then you take a couple of curvy roads and i realize why i bought it. just too many little problems its what happens when you try to make your own production sports sedan with aftermarket pieces.

My gas mileage has suddenly dropped for no reason as well....and I know of 2 others in my area that have the same problem....any idea what caused this?

I agree......that what happens here...my 2nd winter

Oxygenated gasoline (used just in winter in some areas) can reduce fuel efficiency.

Well I am in NC so I don't think that oxygenated gas is the cause. I mean our winters are not really winters. Gets cold but never really for a long period of time. The temp around here flucuates as much as my idle does. Also my car is stock and only has a little over 5000 miles. Going back to the dealership 6 times in the 4 months since I bought it and more than half of those for the same problem is completely unacceptable. I don't care if it was a freaking viper or any other performance car or not performance car. No turns will make me forget this experience and no amount of power could overcome these problems. I loved this car for the first month and then it went to s***. Have noticed that the car doesn't pull as strong as it used to and it is a harsh acceleration. Really hard to describe but it just doesn't feel right or good.

damn, that sucks man. have any other owners been having complaints like his? i didn't think that the protege5 would fall a part that quick, maybe you got a monday car. :p

on a side note. if you want to meet up or something next week ill be kinda close to charlotte, salisbury to be exact. this goes to all other protege people in the queencity area too.

the problems......

Hey Man, after reading all of this,,,I must have missed the part or post about the "clunking"????....what exactly is this????

-taylor5 in Carolina(Greensboro that is)

P.S. I feel for ya dude,,,I had the same types of issues with regional reps and dealers with a 2000 Golf....Great the first month, went to crap after that and never looked back....Good luck man!!

I must have missed a lot. Maybe after reading all this again you can explain your comment . I read information in this thread about one (1) problem.

That's crazy. Personally I would take the car back, give them the keys and request a new one. It's NC law that they get four chances to correct a single problem. If it's not corrected after the fourth time, too bad for them.

Go here: http://www.nclemonlaw.com/what_is.html

Yeah I thought it was four times and then bam new car at first too but after research this is what I found. You have to give Mazda Corporate 1 FINAL ATTEMPT to correct the problem after notifying them by certified mail that this problem exists whether that means putting a new engine in the car , new computer , or what ever. However in NC it is my choice whether I get a new car or a refund of everything I paid. And if they have to end up putting a new engine in the car, because of NC law I can still get my money back because the car is still considered new and having a new engine installed with only 5000 on the car would deteriorate the value too much and that goes against NC Lemon. At the very least I figure I will get a new car out of this. Problem is that I don't want another Mazda. Not just P5 but any Mazda. Not knocking you guys and not saying I don't like some of the other cars or my P5 but all of this has been such a hassle and the dealer has pissed me off and mistreated me so much that I don't want another one. I love the way that the P5 handles and corners and such but my problem is with the engine. The idle won't sit still and the acceleration just doesn't feel right. Not sure how to describe what it is doing except to say that it is not running nice and smooth like a NEW CAR w only 5K on it should. I have actually had several other people drive my car and to them they barely noticed it but we are talking 5 minute rides and most of them were too giddy about taking corners that fast in a wagon to pay attention to the revs and the engine. Most of them did note that they felt what they described as small surges throughout the powerband. All of them once I pointed it out noticed the other problems with the car but it took me to point it out to them.

BOTTOM LINE.... I have them about three different ways when it comes down to it to make them give me a refund or at least a new car.

1. NC Lemon Law of 4 times for same repair
2. NC Lemon Law in that the repair to make car right was too detrimental to the value of the car.
3. I actually got the Service Manager to admit to me that my car was messed up when I bought it and that it was not checked out thouroughly before I bought it.

Worse case I have 2 trump cards. A show around here called Action 9. It's like an expose show that gets people their money or product back from crooked or dishonest businesses and then there is always my lawyer friend.

Yep, if I had that experience I wouldn't want another mazda either. It amazes me that car manufacturers let the dealerships get away with this kind of activity.

You should email (or snailmail) what you said about never wanting another mazda because of the dealership to mazda corp. Copy the owner of that particular dealership. If you haven't already done this. (If you do this, don't slander the dealership in question, just state facts.)

Special mechanic

I have the same problem with the idle. I noticed it when I brought new Protg 5 2003 at about 3,000 mil my idle for no reason at different times and different weather went from 750 rpm to about 400rpm.The car shook and almost stalled out. This happed to me at least 20 times so far. I eventually took it to the dealer to get it fix and was told that they cant find anything wrong with the car and that there was no error code to indicate that a problem exists. Well I am reasonable man and I understand that intermittent problems are hard to diagnose but just because you dont have an error code you cant trouble shoot? Thats BS. Ive bin searching all different posts for an answer to this problem and it seems that a lot of people are having the same problem. So why isnt Mazda addressing this issue?. I would really appreciate if you keep us posted so we can get our cars fixed. In fact you should tell this special mechanic that this is wide spread problem.
Good Luck

Just a thought...
I had the same problem with my '02 P5; after 5 trips into the dealership, they finally replaced the EGR valve.
Problem gone.

Then I got rid of it (the car AND the dealership).

Good luck.
