Hi all. I currently fully rebuilding the engine on my 6. I stripped it Dow n 4 months ago and now I have had the short engine rebuilt I am ready to start building. I am a technician by trade and have noticed the ford galaxy uses the same engine.

On my Autodata instructions for timing up the galaxy it shows a friction washer located behind the bottom sprocket for the timing chain. But when I look at the same information for the 6 it does not show it. I can't seem to find the part either in my parts. I consulted my 6 workshop manual and spoke to the dealer but I can't identify it. Could one be built with it and another without?? I can't remember but i think there was one there. Ford say it has to be replaced when it the bottom pulley is removed but when I spoke to mazda they said it might come with the crankshaft.

HELP!! I want to start the rebuild tomorrow and am afraid that after all the time and money spent I could duck it up

if you don't have mazda's engine rebuild manual (they have one for each engine they supply), i would suggest picking it from your local dealer. it should show whether or not its needed. i would not base a rebuild on a different car, even if the engines are similar.

The crankshaft, crankshaft sprocket, and pulley are fitted together with friction washers in between. Crankshaft-->washer<--crankshaft sprocket-->washer<--pulley. I just rebuilt my 2.3 and used diamond washers, which I believe the stock ones are as well, dealership may have them, if not I'd msg Tony at Gpwerks he's got them. edit-the other forum for Tony, sorry :)

I have a workshop which does not show the friction washer. I also have spoke to the dealer and they can't see it on the EPC.

The engine is identical in every way to the ford galaxy unit and my data on this show a picture and states this washer should be replaced when the bottom pulley is replaced.

I did take lots of photos with my phone when I stripped the unit down but I went to the isle of wight festival and in true British style it rained, my tent flooded and so did my phone.

Thanks your assistance R242, i pretty sure I may have only seen one friction washer. I think it was between the bottom pulley and crank. Do we have the same engine? I will upload the engine code and if I can an image of the galaxy bottom pulley and washer to see if it jogs anyone's memory later today

Thanks people, I appreciate your help
