Mazda 5 Steering noises

I have now owned a Mazda 5 1.8 ts for the last year & in this time have acquired various noises & crunches to say the least (suspension & steering problems).

The only one that we (& Mazda) are having an ongoing issue with is a rather loud grinding noise when you turn the steering at slow speeds - this is worse when wet. Mazda have answered this question with " This noise relates to the electric steering pump & is normal" (????).

I have since listened to the car again for the last 2 weeks & this noise is still there - i can hear the electric pump noise which i would expect anyway & this is not irritating at all (quite quiet actually).

Has anybody else suffered this problem & if so - could they tell me if & how this was repaired.

Any help would be greatly appreciated before i take it back to Mazda again!!

Thanks

I'm located in Ellesmere Port, England. I have read other people have had this problem but they have not posted any solutions - hope someone can help me......

i notice the same thing too.. when i turn at slow speed and it's not a sharp turn.. i notice there's a noise.. it does sounds like electric motor noise tho.

Is it losing steering wheel fluid or intermittently failing?

Anyway, I'm not sure if this really helps (due to the different engine), but my 06 makes more "electric motor" noise than my 08 (North America, Sport, 2.3L), especially when turning while fully stopped. But now, if they are sharing some of the parts with Ford, all my old Ford cars made a lot of power steering wheel "noise" when fully stopped but they worked OK.

Note: No crunching though :(

I notice the same thing,, strange kinda whirring / motor noise and its hard to describe.. havnt taken it in yet for a diagnosis.
Will let you know

the whining noise of the motor-assisted steering can also be heard on our 2006 mz5. But at one time, I did have a loud 'gnashing' noise when turning slow. Sounded like a defective front axle. I called the dealership to schedule. Then I figured I'll trouble shoot. I rotated the tires and noise disappeared. Next day it came back. I torqued the wheel lugs (front right) to specs.. and the noise disappeared. Dealership says we can't fix when problem is gone. For sounds that goes 'click..click..click'.. and faster when turning, I would first try tighting the lug nuts to specs.
