Mazda 5 GT Poor Fuel Economy Help!

I just got back from a trip and got a solid 34mpg in my 08 5AT. I had the AC on about 30 percent of the trip and was loaded down with passengers/gear. I used the scangauge vigilantly and kept my speed under 72mph with a combination of cruise control and slight throttle adjustments as I drove. This trip was about 90 percent highway and 10 percent city/idling. This is the best I've ever done under these conditions. 286 miles/8.4 gallons.

Our 07 5 is exactly like
for comparison, I drive an '09 5 speed M5, mix of hwy and local maybe 70/30, A/C used lately, 75-80mph hwy. my last tank was almost 24mpg. when we did a hwy trip a few months back, best tank IIRC was 29.
btw, I usually fill up about 240-260 on a tank, that shows about 1/4 left
But an auto. My wife has noticed poor mileage but I see her floor it when when she leaves the house (little bit of rich cold running smoke as its hauling down the street). When I asked her if she accelerates hard "not at all" was her answer, sooo yeah.

Hello sorry to resurrect my old thread. I have been busy at work and other things so I forgot about the issue. I have not been able to resolve the problem with fuel injector cleaner or anything else. I did some averaging after a few refills and I get about 19 mpg with 50/50 city/highway driving. I do get stuck in traffic a lot so it probably explains why my mpg is so low.

While I have followed this thread from the start, I have not looked at it since May, so forgive me if you have already tried this: Fill up to max at a station close to the freeway on an early Sunday morning, then drive out for 100 miles, turn around and return to the station. Refill to the max and calculate mileage on that tank. BTW, feel free to vary your speed, but do not exceed 70mph.

If you need less than 7 gallons of gas to refill the tank, then the consumption problem is other than the Mazda5 (traffic, weather, driving style etc) If more than 9 gallons are needed, then the 5 is the problem and the dealer needs to help find a solution. IMO

19 MPG is good in mainly city driving. I believe its due to the fairly high weight to power ratio. That little motor will spin along efficiently when its under light loads, but it does not like bringing the car up to speed from a stop. Sure it scoots right up there but youre really using most of the engines power to do it. It feels great doing it too, because its willing, but the fact that flooring it doesn't really change much tells you how much of the motor is left in reserve(not much). Take more highway trips, like to Tahoe or Vegas, you will see 28 MPG easily if you keep it under 80.

I just filled up monday; this tank was mostly all local driving, with the A/C on all the time. mpg was just under 21.
when I'm mostly hwy, it's around 27mpg.

I just filled up about 52 litres and the vehicle travelled almost 540 kilometres. This was with a 2 adults, 2 children and a packed trunk (another 100 pounds). Probably could do better without all the load. Travelled 80% highway.

2008 Mazda5 GT, automatic, original tires.

With the manual, seeing 24 mpg all city (stoplights 1/2 mile - 1 mile apart, hit most of them) in the winter when not using A/C. But using the A/C all summer, mpg drops to mid 17s. The car usually has at least 320 lbs of passenger inside. Road trips are not good for me, though: 500 lbs of persons + 50 lbs of stuff + 80 mph + 4000 rpm = 21.5 mpg.
I do wonder how the mpgs would stack up if we had the newer Touring w/the 5AT.

Um.....MUCH better! I just did a trip loaded with more than the same amount of stuff. I will protect the innocent with weights and how many people on board :) but I would say we had an easy 550 lbs of people and 100 lbs of stuff for everyone including 2 strollers. We did 70-80 mph and got 28.5 mpg.

Woohoo! I are a certimafied hypermiller! We averaged 29MPG last road trip. Drove about 60 to 65mph, hardly on cruise control, just the constant throttle method. My wife gets better fuel efficiency than I do without even trying. Automatic A/C was set to 22C, three adults a teenager and a baby, and stuff.

Try increasing the throttle downhill just a bit and decreasing going up just a bit, but averaging the same overall speed. Your mileage will go up even more.

Yea on downhills I would drift the speed up to 70 to 75 mph and uphill go down to 60 or less. I wish I got an 08+ for the better mileage, I bet I could do 35mpg in an 08+.

Is there any good way of holding the throttle position?

Who can hack the cruise control software to extend the threshold that applies or decreases throttle, based on vehicle speed changes so the throttle fluctuates SLOOOOOWER?

EDIT - Even better idea, install in the dash an activate circuit that is tied to the brake pedal (failsafe) and a rheostat that is tied to the gas pedal circuit. Calibrate it to coordinate with throttle percentage. When driving, set cruise speed to 10 or so mph lower than you want to travel. Then simply press the activate button and increase the rheostat dial up until the car reaches the desired speed. VOIALA! Constant throttle.
