That's the harness for Mazda3..

That's the dash kit..

And that's the Pioneer unit.
So, here's my first question : the dash kit in the second link -- does it have Double-DIN?
Please consider me completely ignorant but not retarded.

I actually bought the AVIC-D2 for my Scion Tc (perfect fit), but I totaled the car .. Actually, a month and a day ago.

The second question : that wire harness.. It'll work for the Pioneer unit? I don't quite know how that stuff works or what exactly the wire harness is for.

My next problem is that I was only able to get the dash unit, not the GPS antenna, and I wonder if I can get those anywhere for cheap (or if Best Buy will replace those for me, but I need to ask them. Yes, don't kill me, I am not a hardware person [yet anyway], so I have them do the install).

The fourth question : does anyone live in the Commack area on Long Island who has a Mazda? Might be neat to meet some other owners.

I'm not a ricer / audiophile / racer, but I do like quality.

Thanks for your time!

Three days and 30 people looking at this later, no reply?
I guess I'm just gonna invest/waste money in buying the parts and hope that they fit -- and if it's single DIN, I hope it can be sawed off or something to be made into a double DIN.

I just think nobody knows the answers. No the Metra is a single DIN, the harness, call and ask. I buy all my audio stuff from www.crutchfield.com. They are the best company to work with and are extremely knowledgable.

Rhagel : thanks for the reply. Even if nobody knows the answers, a reply to a first post makes one feel acknowledged :)

I realized the Metra is single DIN but I found a post on mazdaforums.com after using a search engine of someone who used a.. hm.. "whiz saw" or something similar to cut the separation and made their double DIN HU fit.

Also, as I wrote, I'm completely ignorant (and therefore incompetent) when it comes to that kind of manual labor, and I don't want to just do that on my own. I haven't even found a FAQ or HOWTO on how to remove the stock HU from the Mazda3 ...

And I probably wouldn't know where to plug the 'speed' wire for the Vehicle Dynamic Gauges on the Pioneer HU. That, however, is a question for the future, when the stuff I ordered arrives.
I'll be sure to keep you all posted so that at least the answers are known :)

that's why they tell you on the box that professional installation is recommended :)

smoof : are you saying that most people on this forum are professionals, or are they all just really, really into it? :)

If you are a do-it-yourselfer, in the future definately go with Crutchfield. They provide you with detailed instructions, mounting kits, wiring harnesses all free of charge. Or included in your purchase, depending on how you look at it. Not to mention they have competetive pricing.

No, I'm not really a DIY. I do computer hardware very well and that's fine, but I'm a little scared of doing stuff inside a car. Now, if I had someone around who knew what they were doing, yeah, I'd probably go the DIY route. I'll keep Crutchfield in mind though, thanks! :)
