Does anyone have pictures of the engine in the engine bay without the plastic on it?
Also does anyone know what type of material the cylinder block is made of, cast iron or alu?

Anyone have any tear down pics, I want to find out how close this engine is to the Miata 1.6l

Also anyone stroke and bore numbers for it?

The engine in the US-spec 2 is the MZR-ZY, 1498cc, 78mm bore by 78.4mm stroke. Aluminum alloy block with iron cylinder sleeves.

The 1.6L used in the NA and NB Miatas are an older design based on the B-series blueprint (specifically, the B6ZE). The ZY in the 2/Demio is from the newer MZR family (variants of which are used in the NC Miata, 3, MS3, 5, 6, MS6 and CX-7).

If you wanted to try an engine swap, your best bet would be to go with another member of the MZR family, like the 2.0L.

From what I hear the Z series is based of the B series, and from what I've seen it looks like and has nothing to do with the bigger MZR engines.
But it maybe possible there has been changes, still some external and internal pics would be great to find out how this engine has changed and what could possible be used between stuff. I would be interested if one of those alu blocks show up in junk yards later on.

I have no interests in any engine which parts won't swap between my B6

Wouldn't suprise me if you could fit a 1.6l crank into there and gain another 100cc from stroke

Mazda's MZR design is much larger in scope than just the L-series that most are familiar with (namely, the 2.0, 2.3 and 2.5L as used in the Mazda3). It also encompasses the Z series as well as the R series diesel engines:

It's true that the earliest Z series engines were an evolved design from the B series, but newer Z engines like the ZY are actually MZR's. (Think of it like how Ford has the Duratec line of engines; not all are from the same series but are simply branded as Duratecs.)
