About the voting thing... how about we submit a title along with our pic and then instead of having the members name on the poll we can have the title of the pic in the poll. That way someone would need to look through the submissions thread to find out who really posted what.
Interesting idea. Or, to simplify it a bit, Yashart could assign a letter or a number to each photo (1, 2, 3 or A, B, C...) when posting up the voting thread. To take it a step further, if anonymity is the goal, the submission thread could be replaced by PM entries directly to Yashart. The winner would then be announced after all the votes were received. Of course, there's no way to make it completely anonymous, since I could really tell whoever I wanted that I entered a picture of a (insert description here).

I'm not 100% sure this is the direction we should go. But, certainly something to think about.

That wouldn't solve the problem of people being told to vote for a certain picture. Maybe the poll shouldn't be annoymous and/or if parameters could be set so some one needs to have a certain amount of posts on the forum to be able to vote. That would stop people from signing up with accounts just to vote. I dunno

I have a few things I would like to express my concern about after re-reading this thread.

Let me start by saying that I hope this post does not directly offend anyone. I apologize in advance if you feel as if this post is being directed towards you.

Fist topic: Photo Submission- The first thing that I would like to change, are the actual photo submission rules. The only reason prizes are offered, is to give people an incentive to go out and take pictures. It serves a double purpose, as the person who wins also gets rewarded for their efforts. However, I have a problem when there is no effort involved in the process. I see no reason why anyone should be rewarded for posting a picture that they took three summers ago, or anything of that nature. It kind of defeats the entire purpose of the prize. I believe I give everyone more than enough time to go out, take some photos, edit them if need be, and post an image they think best captures that months topic. Do you guys want/ need more time? Since this was never an official rule of the contest, there is nobody at fault for this. I cannot expect you guys to follow something that was never formally voiced. This is something that I would simply like to change for future contests.

Next Topic: Voting - Please vote based on the actual image that is posted, and not on the person who posted the image. This is not meant to be a popularity contest. Voting should be based on the merit of the photo, not the merit of the member. I don't care if the Jessica Alba herself submitted a photo here; If another member posted an image that I thought was better, then he or she gets my vote. We all have friends, and most of us are "friends" on this forum. Voting on your friends picture takes validity away from the actual contest. It discourages other members from wanting to get involved. Both first time contestants, and "veterans" have no desire to compete in a contest where they feel that no matter what they post, they have no chance of winning. Saying all of this, understand that I do expect there to be some of this going on, no matter what. I cannot single handedly stop members from voting on their friends. There is no way for me to stop or control this. It boils down to the members of this forums voting for the best image. I cannot stress enough how important this is. I would hate to see people stop participating because of this. If you want to show your friends how much you appreciate them, treat them to lunch or something :)

Third Topic: Photoshop - I agree with most of the members here on this topic. There is nothing wrong with using photoshop to edit your photo. People should be voting on the final product. Simply put, Photoshop can be used to make a good image, a great one. I as well, would hate to see this become an unofficial rule of the contest. I allow images to edited anyway the user wants because it allows for great creativity. Donas64's picture of the bonnicle (or whatever it was, lol) comes to mind. He tried something different; some people liked it, others did not. I congratulate him for thinking outside the box and trying something different. Now this doesn't mean you have to use photoshop to be be different or creative, but it can definitely help. If you have no desire to use it, then so be it. But please don't knock our members who do chose to use it. The only thing that should be looked at is the final product. If you like it, vote for it!

Final Topic: tonkabui - Sorry to put you in the spotlight, but this is a touchy subject for me. I have to agree with most people here; 20 votes in one day is very strange. I am not saying that isn't possible, or that you cheated, but nobody has gone from "zero to hero" that fast before. I am not accusing you of cheating, it is just a little phishy to me. I have no evidence of you doing otherwise. Whether you asked your friends on another forum to vote for you, or you PM'd a bunch of friends, or maybe it was an act of God; who knows. But I do know that 20 votes does not come out of nowhere. Although there isn't much I can do to investigate, I hope that an explanation does come to light. Are you 100% sure that you have no idea why 20 people decided to vote for you overnight? Did you have any influence in this at all? Once again, I am not accusing you of cheating. I am sure that all of the votes came from legitimate members. I would just like to find some kind of explanation to all of this.

Once again, I hope i did not insult anyone in this thread (even you tonkabui). If I did, I am truly sorry. Thanks again to everyone who participated, and keep up the good work!

1. Agree with taking a current picture and not one from years ago. I think there is more than ample time given to go out and take a shot. Time stamping could easily verify this (although a time-stamp could be photoshopped in)

2. It should not be a popularity contest. The best picture deserves to win. This will also encourage new photographers as well as veterans to participate

3. Agreed. While not everyone has access to photoshop, photoshop does not make or break a picture. I've only used PS for one of my pics so far and personally I prefer unretouched pics but either way, the final product should be judged. Remember its easy to screw up a pic in photoshop too.

As far as the 20 vote explosion. I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt and I have no problems with him winning the contest.

since the beginning of this contest I thought that a current submission should only be allowed, whether or not I ever expressed that. it's what a competition is all about. i think that rule alone will weed out a lot of confusion and points of contention, because so far, i believe only a handful of people are shooting relevant and new material for the contest.

PS- it's also not about getting 20 or so votes in one day- it's about getting 20 or so votes in one day and for all of those to be your only votes for the entire 2 week voting period. not that i think there were really any shennanigans or anything, it'sjust odd, and we need some method of verification.

Photo Submission - I am more than happy to abide to this. My only concern is that the subject matter may leave people out. For instance, a subject matter of "Beach Fun" or "Mountain Landscapes". For myself, I had the perfect picture that I had in mind for the Spring theme. Though since it was still winter in my area I could not simply go out and retake the same picture. Just thoughts to add.

PS - Thanks all who voted for me this month. I'll keep trying my best to bring something new and creative.

i had 3 votes the first day (28th), didn't check back the second, 20 by the third (30th). ended with 22 by sunday. 10 of those came from the az guys. and the competition ran for 1 week, not two.

nah, no offense taken.

here's a link to a thread i created over on azmc. as i pm'd you a day into the voting when the first calls of a public poll were voiced, i wanted to make this a public poll so there can be no question as to who is voting for who.

http://azmcadmin.web.aplus.net/vb/forums/showthread.php?t=1773

from there, i count only 10 people who voted for me from azmc. that means somewhere in there, i picked up another 12 votes. and there ain't no way in hell i'm going to sit here and sign up with 12 different email addresses to vote for myself. i have more important things to do with my time.

if the accusations are going to fly, they should fly at everyone. as suddenly as my 3 votes went to 22, 9 votes went to 16. uh oh.

and as to your point about the old picture... sorry, there was nothing in the rules that said the picture had to be no older than when the competition started. in fact, 90% of the shots were taken sometime before the contest opened up, many of them are at least a few months to a year old. i think nate's the only one who actually went out and took a picture specifically for this contest. from here on out, make it explicit that the picture has to be sometime within the time frame of when the contest is announced to the last day of entry eligibility. i don't see the difference between a picture being three years old and one being from a month ago being any different. they all weren't taken for the specific purpose of being an entry into this competition.

to ensure you're getting a picture within the time frame you set forth, have them send you a file straight from the camera. no editing allowed at this stage. that way, you can see when the pic was taken using ps or any other photo editing program. people who don't set the right time on their cameras are disqualified the same as people who submit old pics.

Very True. I think Yashart will have to take this into consideration and do the best he can to make the topics accessible to all. A little tricky but I think it can be done.

and btw i think you are incorrect in saying nate was the only one with current work. i don't know how you would know that.

so from 20 entries, TWO were taken within the time frame. yours, msp03.5 and azian6er had no exif data. that gives me a 90% hit rate of guaranteed photos taken specifically for this contest. nate and boricua were the only two photos taken on or after may 2nd.

The date you have listed from my picture is wrong. I took that picture in Jan 2006 on my honeymoon in Newport RI.
