Manual Tranny problems.

:
02' MP5/07' M6
Recently my P5 has started grinding in third gear no matter how slow i shift,no matter what i do, i took out my winter mats thinking i wasn't pushing the clutch far enough down but no help.

Now even my second gear is grinding constantly, even when i down shift.

The car only starts grinding once its fully warmed up, when its cold it shifts fine, and the tranny fluid was chaged just a month ago.

i was quoted 800.00 canadian tax in. to rebuild every gear. but i'm not doing anything now i'm gunna wait it out, because the car is still driveable and its not that bad, but still pretty anoying.

i was told that it could be the friction point on the clutch is not proerly adjusted.. anyways any suggestions would be appreciated

-thanks

is your clutch pedal loose? also there's a bolt on your pedal assembly that you can turn to change how far the hydraulic plunger goes in. could be that its not fully disengaging the clutch

i'm havin this problem too. hasn't gotten that severe but is gradually getting worse.
i don't think its that gimpo. i've screwed around w/ that a lot. i've made a concious effort to make sure the clutch is all the way in and it still grinds. and usually if it isn't 100% disengaged when u shift, it just wont let it in gear.
i've been thinkin of getting a new tranny all together from speedcircuit.net.

i think our problem is our early 2002 trannies. they're weaker than the 2002.5+ year models. kinda sux doesn't it?

if anyone has a cheaper and effective fix for this crap, please speak up

Did the problem start after the fluid change? I would make sure the correct wieght of oil is in there. If it does it only when it is warm it may have too thin of oil. Unfortunatly damage is done. If it is grinding in one gear only the syncro is probably gone. If it is grinding in all the gears look at the clutch.

no it started grinding way before i got the chnage, after i got the oil changedit just continued didn't get worse. and it only grinds in 2nd and 3rd i'm pretty sure its the syncro, and everytime its grinds its flaking into the tranny. i think it can only get worse from here, like i said the rebuild all my syncros its 800.00 canadian tax in, does this seem like a fair price, for a complete rebuild.

Are you running synthetic? I have experienced that sometimes it is too slippery.
Does the rebuild include the bearings? Ther more you drive it the more metal floats around, sooner or later it will get in the bearings. If it includes the bearings that is not bad for a shop to do it in the US. I am not sure on the exchange rate.

yes it includes everything, and yes its synthetic.

are you still under the powertrain warranty? My powertrain runs out in June and I want to get mine looked at. MIne grinds into second and occasionally pops out of third. I am assuming since it is transmission related, that the powertrain would cover it. Am I wrong?

The dealership repaired my 3rd gear syncro under the powertrain warranty. The transmission was already out of the car by the time it got to them and it was being opened up for warranty work anyway so this may have smoothed things along.

Always worth a shot. And don't settle for their first answer.

I think I have asked this before, but can;t remember the answer.

Since my 3rd gear only pops out on occasion (it shouldn;t do it at all), I doubt a test drive from the dealer will make it happen to them....so therefore it is kind of my word vs theirs. Do I have to get it looked at by a transmission place first and get proof and then bring it to the dealer or just go to the dealer and say fix it.

Oh, and did you own the car from the start? I got mine used last september. Does that make any difference? I just took it to a local mazda dealer and said this is where I am going to bring it for all warrantry work and such. They didn;t even inspect it. Is that normal?

1) That's a tough one. Your best bet is to bring it to them and open a file on the issue. That way if the problem gets to the point where it's easily reproduceable you'll have a case that the issue existed under warranty. Also, you may get lucky and have the symptom appear on the test drive.

2) Nope, I'm the second owner of the car. It shouldn't make a difference that you aren't the first owner. As for the inspection, I brought mine to the mazda dealer before I bought it for them to look at. I booked the apt. and then drove it there first thing in the morning. It turned out they didn't enter it into the computer and couldn't fit me in. The person at the desk basically told me "they're good cars, why do you want it inspected?". Sheesh. I took it to a private mechanic instead. So from my perspective it is normal that they don't bother to inspect it.

What would the price difference be for intalling a used transmission?
the guy said used 1200.00, but then again it might have the same problems, if that thing about the early model 2002 trannys being weak.
