MAM SS or HiBoost

btw, i'm only looking to get to about 200whp, 250whp max...This is my daily driver so I need it to be very reliable.

Another question. are both kits tuneable w/ a laptop and can they be adjusted so that you don't have startup problems in the winter? I have heard that some ppl with the hiboost kit had a hard time starting their cars when it was really cold out.

This thread makes me want a turbo kit SOOOOOO bad.

Some questions:

What is the difference between having the Haltech that the Hiboost comes with and the other fuel management that the MAM SS comes with? Also, both kits require tapping of the oil pan, correct?

I have a stock P5, 5spd. What would I need in addition to either of these kits? Clutch, exhaust? anything else?

I also have a P5, 5 Spd. with the MAM SS kit running for over 12000km. I would recommend replacing the stock clutch if you boost with any kit. 4.5 lbs of boost should be alright for a stock clutch to support, but if you are gonna run the stock 6lbs of boost that most kits come tuned for, your stock clutch won't survive more than a few hard pulls before it starts to slip.

An upgraded exhaust will help with power, but is not required.

Beau's AEM is gonna be the cat' meow in my books when he releases it, however Hiboosts Haltech works very well also.

let me take a stab...
First of all, fuel management- the MAM SS you can get without, in fact, it comes without, you can add whichever you like- AEM, Haltech, MPI, etc
I believe both kits require the oil pan to be drilled and tapped. In my experience, it took a good welder and 15 minutes. Perhaps find a junk yard pan, and get this done ahead of time. What you'll absolutely NEED to get over 200whp is definitely a clutch. Yours will start to slip like mad. You don't NEED an exhaust, however, it will get you to your goal alot easier. 250whp would more than likely require rods. I'd say you could get 215whp on your stock bottom end. My car is also my daily driver, and I've had NO issues. Still as reliable, very nice. I am VERY picky when it comes to that. I NEED it to start everyday and not have ANY downtime. I believe most engine management software is tuneable via laptop. I know the AEM is, the MPI is, and the haltech. I have MAM right now and have NO issues on cold start. I've started it like stock in -5F weather :D

any other qs? :)

The HiBoost kit comes with the Haltech F10X pre tuned and yes, it is tunable by a laptop. I believe the MAM has no fuel management. You need to purchase it by separate.
The cold start has been solved by using the iridium plugs. Toronto YP5 has them and has worked in very cold mornings. Pretzellogic also seems to have it solved with the plugs. It means that the plugs supplied with the kit will be the iridiums from now on.

Here are some dyno numbers:

This is with a catless system 259 WHP at 13 psi and 231 WHP at 10 psi

dynoresmp5%202.jpg

This is with a 2.25 cat back. 214 whp at 8 psi of boost

Enlighten us Juan, which plugs?

Model Number, Brand?

Extended Reach?

:)

NGK IRDIUM IX --> BKR5EIX-11
and
NGK IRDIUM IX (Extended Reach)--> ZFR5EIX-11

I use the extended reach... Heat range 6. I am using 6 right now...I have a set of 5s, but to lazy to install.

-25 Celcius / -13 Fahrenhiet the car started up with a few trys and some light peddle action.

Outside of that.... there is always a bit of room for tweaking the maps with regards to cold starting, but we have another thread talking about why.

FYI if you drive like a responsible adult, like me, you can save your stock clutch for a long time. iw as at 8psi for about a year with no clutch slippage. even now im pretty much in good shape but its slipping slightly.

Thanks for the info, so let me get this straight.

Stock plugs on the MSP are 6, so you are running stock temps for the MSP, but one step colder than what comes with the P5 stock?

And you are recommending a heat range 5 plug? That would be one step hotter than stock on the MSP, where as far as I know, it's recommended to go colder if you plan on running high amounts of boost.

How much boost would you run on the 5s with how much octane, and the same with the 6s?

How much boost can you run a 5 before you get to detonation?

Although I would imagine in cold that extreme you won't want to boost that much anyways.

it would still depend on the tune
Of course. :)

Just trying to get more info out there that will be of benefit to the community. Thankfully I don't have to deal with temps that cold on a regular basis. Maybe occasionally when traveling though. I love California (the coldest it gets around here is into the low 30s overnight with the occasional dip into the 20s if it's very very cold.)

i am trying hard to get you a copy of my map but my wireless transfer from the carputer has been less than friendly to the *.6xm files and corrupting them as i try to send them over. i think altering the post start and the air temperature enrichments is needed as well as the plugs personally. the temperature correction on my f10x was very fuel generous lets say :D

if you call up Flyin' Miata you can get the drill bit and fitting to tap our oil pans without any welding. i personally disagree with you pat on the bottom end handling 215 whp for a truly long time. the stock rods are garbage and if you boost over 8 psi on them i'd call that a dice roll at best.

With this setup, you can run as much as 18 psi on 91 octane or 22 on 93 octane fuel with the 8.5 to 1 compression pistons. With race fuel 24 psi is the limit of the turbo.

nucking futz, man

my own two cents on what to add to any turbo kit; definetely a clutch and a lighter flywheel with a decent exhaust. up grading the exhaust and flywheel has made the car much peppier in and out of boost and it spools up quicker

8 psi on 91 octane with our kit or 11 on 93 octane

hahahah well thats not me i have a blue p5

Wow, what a read. My MAM SS kit was just picked up by FedEx. I am planning on a Haltech E6X from Juan, with a custom exhaust from a local shop. My engine is currently stock.

Here is the thread where I will be detailing my progress.
