main gripe you MS6 owners have?

What do you mean by the shock sensor??

I love the car, i would have to say that for the price i would expect a more flexible sound system, like plug ins for mp3, more sound adjustability ect.

Alarm shock sensor. It's an available upgrade.

my main gripe? the same gripe with every Mazdaspeed I have had, un-trained mechanics that are not prepared to handle the performance aspects of the car.

Has anyone that hates the fake exhaust tips looked at the Lexus 450h? You might be surprised....LOL! I don't feel so bad about the tips anymore.

Getting electrocuted every time you get out of the car :)

This used to happen with my MSP ALL the time, but it hasn't happened with either the MS6 or the MS3...yet!

Overall, I love this car. It looks great and it's fun as hell to drive however...

1. Seatback had some sort of flaw, the color is coming off and it looks terrible. The dealership is going to replace it, but still...I haven't even owned it a year.

2. The horrible clutch action. I can't even believe that Mazda shipped these cars with that clutch. After adjusting it, it's alright though.

3. Paint seems a little thin, there are lots of chips in the front of the car.

4. Fake exhaust tips.

I didn't notice any change with the flash, my performance seems to be uniformly good.

The only other thing is not the fault of the car but this is the first brand new car that I have owned and I hate experiencing every knock and scatch on it first hand. A huge piece of tire got thrown into my hood several months ago and I still have nightmares about it.

Number 1 issue - the "auto-locking". It works intermittently and is about as retarded as the old Saturn door-mounted seatbelts... I'll handle the locking of my car, thank you very much.

But I love my car. Best Mazda ever.

First gripe is gas mileage (only 20 mpg mix driving)
Second gripe is brake dust on wheels and cleaning stock rims, requires some work.
Lastly cleaning the black trim on the side mirrors and black muffler trim especially after driving in the rain seems to turn dull. (Any tips on keeping it black and semi glossy?)

Hey gang,

Just picked up my MS6 (Liquid Platinum on Black leather) this weekend, so this is my first post.

To put these gripes in context, my previous two cars were a 2000 Miata Special Edition (summer toy) and a 1993 Talon TSi AWD (winter beater).

1) Clutch: Talk about non-linear take-up action! I've sort of gotten used to it, but no one who tries out my car can execute a smooth launch or 1-2 shift, even if their lives depended on it. I cringe every time I experience it from the passenger seat. Needless to say, I will be adjusting it as per posted instructions ASAP.

2) Engine refinement (or lack thereof): This is Mazda's most advanced engine?? Sure, it makes gobs of power but it goes about it in a very thrashy manner, especially between 2500-3500 RPM, which feels and sounds like a bag full of crushed walnuts. I'd have thought with DISI, it would have been even smoother than the sweet, normally-aspirated 2.3 found in the 6i and Mazda3 GT, but it's not even close. It's not even as smooth as the 2.0 turbo I had in my 14-year old Talon! What gives?

3) Gearbox: Perhaps this is an unfair comparison, but measured against the slick, rifle-bolt action of the Miata's stick, this unit feels vague and rubbery. Coupled with the jerky clutch, it almost makes me wish for an automatic sometimes (almost). It probably isn't the worst in its segment, though.

4) Fussy wheels/brake dust: I know, I know... It's a front-heavy, FWD-based sedan, and dust is a fact of life. But geez, is it ever a pain to clean 60 frickin' spokes!

5) Stereo: Not embarassing, but not what you would expect to find in a Japanese manufacturer's flagship sedan, either. The BOSE unit in the Altima SE-R is better.

6) Fiddly advanced key functions: I'm no Luddite when it comes to these things, but I still find myself locking when I intend to unlock, and vice-versa, regardless of whether I'm pressing the button on the remote or the door. Just a minor annoyance.

7) Lack of a rear-seat pass-through: I know Mazda engineers deleted the regular 6 sedan's folding rear seat feature in favour of extra cross-bracing, but as we've seen on this forum and others, the seats still fold down! Some resourceful people have even fashioned remote triggers and clever pass-through openings between the braces to maximize the utility of the trunk. Would it have killed Mazda to do this for us?

8) Ultra-premium fuel requirement: It was bad enough having to fill up with 91 super, as I did with the Talon. But it's absolutely ludicrous having to find a place with 94 octane every time I need to fill up this car.

9) Front-end appearance: I'm with Jeremy Clarkson on this one: I think both front grilles (upper and lower) look cheap. A stainless steel mesh grille like the one Jaguar uses on its 'R' models would have dressed things up nicely without bumping up the price too much.

OK, just so you don't think I'm down in this car, here are a few of the things that have impressed me thus far:

1) Highway acceleration and cruising: From 60-80 mp/h, this thing's a jet!

2) Overall fit and finish: no squeaks, rattles or loose trim... yet (fingers crossed!)

3) Grip: Wet or dry, the AWD/TSC/DSC systems keep everything solidly planted on the road.

4) Versatility: If you gotta have one fun car for all seasons, this one makes a lot of sense.

5) Value: It's a lot of car for the money.

Westley's Black Magic...in the bottle, it's a thick silicone base you apply with a sponge or rag. The more you use it the longer it will stay and less you will have to do it, I use it on my sidewalls also and they always look good, and it goes a long way.

I don't own one but I test drove one and it was really fun and very classy but I don't like the clutch and definitely do not like the understeer! Maybe I'm spoiled being used to my friends STI but I really did not like the feel of the larger front drive ratio. It would be great for harsh conditions but being able to drift corners in the STI there is no better feeling! I plan on either getting an STI, MS6, or 350Z next car and I hat to admit it but the STI is still my top choice so far. I have some time yet so hopefully you MS6 guys can convince me otherwise with your mods and stats. Don't get me wrong though, the car is totally awesome!! I'd just rather have a wicked fast car, stripped interior, racing seat and steering wheel, thats just the kind of guy I am.

There's no reason to consider this car over the STI if performance is all you are after. Looks on the other hand...

Anyways, my only grip is the damn seat belt chime. The times it comes on are the times I don't normally need a seat belt. For example, driving my kids to their friends house, which I can see from my house, in 14 degree weather when I don't want them walking outside. It is literally 7 houses away. I can't even get the car out of second gear before I reach their house. Short of a neighbor backing out of their driveway, or opening the door of their parked car in front of me, I'm not getting into any accidents during that drive.

Oh, and I guess the CELs I got are a complaint, but they aren't something that affects everyone, so that might be a little unfair.

Biggest Gripe: Reflash

Second Biggest Gripe: Not enough convenience/electronic content for a car of this price range. I knew this and I still bought it - therefore I cannot complain too loudly.

The winter wheels/tires look great - 17"?
Where did you get them, what are they and what did you pay?

You are close to me. (PA) You're winters are probably similar or milder than mine. You probably could get away with Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S. That's what I have and they are decent as long as the snow isn't over 6 inches.
$125 each at Tire Rack

Here's the thread on them:

Edit: Opps, you said 17s. Well, don't know about those.

In response to Inferno's detailed comments...

1) Clutch: The fix truely makes the car a joy to drive. It still won't be as soft as the Protege5 but it helps quite a bit.

2) Engine refinement (or lack thereof): Other than some bucking when shifting (which is apparently due to a crappy engine mount -- CP-E, SU, and AWR have replacements) I feel the engine is pretty smooth for a turbo. It kicks in fast and at WOT the car screams. It backs off a little in the upper RPMs but it is forgivable when you shift and get thrown back into the seat again.

3) Gearbox: I find the gearbox a little stiff. I am usually a relaxed driver and I find myself hammering the shifter instead of gently motioning through the gears. I have felt much worse in terms of sloppyness. I suppose if you are coming from a car with a short-shifter it may appear loose but I think it is a compromise between performance and ease of use. (TWM offers bushings and a short-shifter if you are interested)

4) Fussy wheels/brake dust: Gotta agree here. It only took a week for my fronts to get dirty...and a week after that they look like they need to be cleaned again. I hope this improves when the pads break in.

5) Stereo: Bose is bose...they tune their systems for a specific curve at a specific volume...it is pleasant for an initial test drive and for low listening levels but any extended listening session to any Bose system will reveal their secrets...tuning and cheap speakers != loud listening.

6) Fiddly advanced key functions: Gotta agree with this on one circumstance. If you unlock the driver's door with one click, drive somewhere, then go to open the trunk, you can't. You cannot press the button on the trunk...it refuses to unlock when just the driver's door is open. To get into the trunk you have to lock/unlock/unlock using the button on the driver's door or open the door and unlock with the indoor switch. Stupid. I suppose this prevents a thief from running up to the car and opening the passenger door as you enter the driver's door (and thus applies to the trunk) but I have done this twice and looked like a fool in front of family members because I couldn't get the trunk open. It just beeps at you.

7) Lack of a rear-seat pass-through: No problem with this for me. If I need to fold the seats down...it can obviously be done.

8) Ultra-premium fuel requirement: If you want 273HP from a 4 cyl engine you've got to pay the price. People have claimed that you can put 91 or even 87 in but the ECU will detect it and cut boost. So save money and miss out on the performance, or empty your wallet and enjoy the car it was meant to be driven.

9) Front-end appearance: I like the front better than the regular 6. It is aggressive and sporty. Sure a better grill might have dressed it up but then you would be paying extra for it. The price point of this car (even without incentives) is still a pretty good deal compared to its targeted competition.

1) Highway acceleration and cruising: From 60-80 mp/h, this thing's a jet! I tend to lose track of the time I am going 60-80. I usually merge into traffic and then realize I'm nearing 90!

2) Overall fit and finish: no squeaks, rattles or loose trim... I agree here, even with the stiff suspension the only thing I hear is my stuff in the glove box shifting from side to side as I dive into corners.

3) Grip: The traction control kicks in very abbruptly at times and ruins some of the fun...but it hasn't caused me to lose control...doing its job I guess. When you are cornering and hard accellerating, just as a FWD car might start to loose control you can feel the back end push you around the corner as the AWD kicks in.

4) Versatility: Plenty of room for passengers and luggage...and it never feels weighted down (enough with the fat pig references -- this car is fast)

5) Value: It's a lot of car for the money. Indeed

My only gripes

Clutch - easily fixed with the how to

Advanced Keyless - waiting for the dealer to get the replacement antenna in...its not a big deal, but the fact that warranty work is being done with 1400 miles on the car is disheartening.

other than that, its awesome (thumb)

oh, and in regards to the 60-80 its a jet..yup. get on the freeway, get up to like 65, then look down and i'm doing 85. lay off it, get back to 65, and bam...its gonna get me in trouble one of these day ;)

My only problem so far is that I cant lock the doors when i'm outside the car if the car is turned on and I still have the keycard in my pocket. Is this some sort of setting I can change? Reading the manual I also dont like the fact that it seems any setting change for the advanced key has to be done by the dealer. Oh, one more, read in the manual, that you either have to have the car doors not autolock at all or autolock after 30 seconds EVEN if the keycard is in the car.

Why would you want to lock the doors while the car is still running and the key is in your hand? You should never leave a car running unattended anyway...in fact I think it is a crime in most states.

well I need to warm it up when its cold out, aint that the main reason why people get remote starters anyways? and of course I dont want to leave the car unlocked and running.
