Hey gang,
Just picked up my MS6 (Liquid Platinum on Black leather) this weekend, so this is my first post.
To put these gripes in context, my previous two cars were a 2000 Miata Special Edition (summer toy) and a 1993 Talon TSi AWD (winter beater).
1) Clutch: Talk about non-linear take-up action! I've sort of gotten used to it, but no one who tries out my car can execute a smooth launch or 1-2 shift, even if their lives depended on it. I cringe every time I experience it from the passenger seat. Needless to say, I will be adjusting it as per posted instructions ASAP.
2) Engine refinement (or lack thereof): This is Mazda's most advanced engine?? Sure, it makes gobs of power but it goes about it in a very thrashy manner, especially between 2500-3500 RPM, which feels and sounds like a bag full of crushed walnuts. I'd have thought with DISI, it would have been even smoother than the sweet, normally-aspirated 2.3 found in the 6i and Mazda3 GT, but it's not even close. It's not even as smooth as the 2.0 turbo I had in my 14-year old Talon! What gives?
3) Gearbox: Perhaps this is an unfair comparison, but measured against the slick, rifle-bolt action of the Miata's stick, this unit feels vague and rubbery. Coupled with the jerky clutch, it almost makes me wish for an automatic sometimes (almost). It probably isn't the worst in its segment, though.
4) Fussy wheels/brake dust: I know, I know... It's a front-heavy, FWD-based sedan, and dust is a fact of life. But geez, is it ever a pain to clean 60 frickin' spokes!
5) Stereo: Not embarassing, but not what you would expect to find in a Japanese manufacturer's flagship sedan, either. The BOSE unit in the Altima SE-R is better.
6) Fiddly advanced key functions: I'm no Luddite when it comes to these things, but I still find myself locking when I intend to unlock, and vice-versa, regardless of whether I'm pressing the button on the remote or the door. Just a minor annoyance.
7) Lack of a rear-seat pass-through: I know Mazda engineers deleted the regular 6 sedan's folding rear seat feature in favour of extra cross-bracing, but as we've seen on this forum and others, the seats still fold down! Some resourceful people have even fashioned remote triggers and clever pass-through openings between the braces to maximize the utility of the trunk. Would it have killed Mazda to do this for us?
8) Ultra-premium fuel requirement: It was bad enough having to fill up with 91 super, as I did with the Talon. But it's absolutely ludicrous having to find a place with 94 octane every time I need to fill up this car.
9) Front-end appearance: I'm with Jeremy Clarkson on this one: I think both front grilles (upper and lower) look cheap. A stainless steel mesh grille like the one Jaguar uses on its 'R' models would have dressed things up nicely without bumping up the price too much.
OK, just so you don't think I'm down in this car, here are a few of the things that have impressed me thus far:
1) Highway acceleration and cruising: From 60-80 mp/h, this thing's a jet!
2) Overall fit and finish: no squeaks, rattles or loose trim... yet (fingers crossed!)
3) Grip: Wet or dry, the AWD/TSC/DSC systems keep everything solidly planted on the road.
4) Versatility: If you gotta have one fun car for all seasons, this one makes a lot of sense.
5) Value: It's a lot of car for the money.
