M3 Owner Electrical

Hi,
I'm new to the forums and new to Mazda ownership, but really liking it. I have a super stock M3. No changes on anything (yet). So first just saying a "hello"...
Second- I got about 25,000 miles on it and my engine light just now came on- does that just mean (according to manual) simply tune-up? Because I thought while I was driving I felt a slight static-type shock- which made me think electrical/ short on something.
Anyone has any experience in electrical? And could the light be a result of another issue vs. typical maintenance?
I'm taking it in anyway- but just curious?

a "Check Engine Light" means, ahem, that you need to check the engine.

or, at least, check to see what the code is....
