2002 Mazda Protege 5
Hi everyone,

I've been a member for a long time, but i think this is my first post... I love this forum...

Well, I have an 02 Protege5, black, 5spd... absolutly love the car had it for about a year...

The other night i was driving along on a road where they were doing construction, and i was about the change lanes, going 50-60km/h and as soon as i do, my right front tire runs over something and the car jumps up, then the back tire runs over and the car start banging and shaking side to side.. i thought i ran over a bigrock and it blew my tire out... so i get out and see the tire flat.

I was on a busy street so i get in to pull into a parking lot, but the car wouldnt budge... i knew instantly that it was more than a flat... i get out and look under and i see the wheel has cracked and bent up on the inside and its hitting parts of the suspension so it wont turn...

i walked back to where it happend and saw what i hit... it was a friggin top of a pipe, like a manhole cover but smaller, they had cut it off from the pipe and it was left on the road!!! i was sooo pissed.

now im in contact with the city, cause im sure theres more damage than just the wheel, the front-endmakes a lot of noise and the ABS comes on randomly which is dangerous cause the car takes longer to stop on smooth ground...

anyways, i just wanted to say hi to everyone and vent a little lol

here r some pics... :' (

That really sucks. Hopefully someone will pay up for the damages and inconvenience.

Where abouts in T.O. is this construction so that I can avoid that too?

You'll find that the OEM wheel is around $400 CDN.

EACH!

You can probably pickup some nice wheels on our local board.

Dayum! That is some major bendage!
They should pay full retail and then you can go buy some aftermarket rims.

well i was in Aurora at the time on Wellington St.... i'll never forget that name for the rest of my life lol

i dont know if i should get everything fixed and then give them the bill, or if i should get money from them first... the other thing is i dont know what else is damaged... im sure the brakes are cause of the ABS, but it sounds like parts of the suspension in the front might be damaged too...

i was gonna take it to Mazda and have them check everything and give me and estimate, then give the estimate to the city.... i hope they pay for it, cause im too broke for this sh*t right now lol

Did you get a police report the day it happened? Witnesses?

Ask the city how you should do it - i.e. send a bill or what.

well a cop passed me right after it happened and didnt stop... but i was thinkin if i called them, they would make me tow the car, cause it was on a really busy street... and with my luck, i had the jack, but not the wrench... so it took me a good hour to find someone to borrow it from, they would have def made me tow the car...

when i think about it now, it would have been good to have a police report.. but... the only witness was my friend who came to help me that lives around there and the guy that we got the wrench from.. but he didnt see anything so..

thats a good idea, i should ask them how to go about it.
thanks for the replies guys!

Ok, first the rash of people running into our beloved P5's, now they are leaving boobey traps on roadways....what is next?

That sux man!!! Best of luck working it out with the city....I wouldn't wait to hear from them, get the estimate from Mazda so you know what other damage there may be.

"What's next?" is a question best left unasked. Nothing positive ever comes from asking. LOL

i finally talked to someone about it, and they said i need to fax them the details of what happens, and they will investigate it... if i choose to not go through insurance, i will have to wait till the investigation is over for anything if i win... i really really dont want to go through insuranace for this... i dont even know if its covered for this type of stuff...

anyways, im on my way to the dealership for an estimate... wish me luck!

Your poor little P5! Good luck - here's hoping you get the city to pay for all of the repairs...

wow that is bad man. Hope everything goes ok for you. Guess you have an excuse to buy new rims and tires...lol

wow is right. that rim is toast for sure, no bending that back in place! what's next...a p5 sink hole??

UPDATE:

i went to mazda and they gave me the estimate... they said that they need to change:

tire
rim
hub & bearing
both rear stabilizer links
possible rear strut
ABS sensor
exhaust heat sheild
4 wheel alignment

and then after that, they have to recheck everything again for more damage..

and the total is $2200cdn...

Son of a damn it! That sucks. Makes my 'scrape' with a curb seem mild...
