Lock up Torque Converter in Sport Shift auto tranny??

I was wondering during my roadtrip this weekend if the SportShift automatic Tranny in my GF's 2003 MP5 had a Lock-Up type torque converter.... seemed like the car was dropping a few RPM's without shifting into any higher gear...

Anyonw can shed some light?

Thanks

Yes I do drive an 1989 Dodge Caravan SE Turbo....

I bought the van as a winter beater, but I fixed it up real good, rust repair here and there, the interior is brand new (well preserved) and the engine is not bad for 190,000 Km on it...

I still have that puny Mitsubishi TD05H turbo , but it's good to push out a effective 18 PSI....

I installed a Volvo Intercooler in it this summer and it's great, 20% more power! I've taken down a couple of civics and Riced Cavaliers in my tranny's better days...... :'( It started slipping at 14 PSI , so I had to lower the boost to a conservative 4 PSI until I can get my Turbo Omni out and repair the van.

I have yet to try it on the track, but with the G-Tech, I made a respectable 15.9 at 90 MPH.... no traction with super winter tires!!!

Here's a little pic with my summer rims/rubber.....

It's an old picture, now my bumper is blacked out, no more fog lights and the rust is repaired....

And there's nothing funnier to see people's reaction to a van with a Blow-off valve!!! :D :D

that van is from around me! he sucker punked me one sat.afternoon. you know... your out cruising around, car all clean, radio up....some dufus in a minivan wants to give you the stop light run. then he shuts my ass down like Im driving a kia!
Btw I was in my old car not the mp3 or he would have got me worse!:wtf:
oh yeah... I don't condone street racing

Hmmm...what if :p

Good stuff...

lol...Oh...right the topic...can anyone shed some light?

I'm pretty sure that the Sport Shift auto uses the same TC just different electronics and shifter. I also think the Protege has a locking TC BUT it is more aggressive than a lot of locking TC's people are used to and it unlocks to get the extra revs when some people don't expect it. If I recall, this was described in a thread about cruise control nitpicks .

Cool, thanks for the answer.. I knew it had a lockup TC from the way the tranny was acting under load (from a hill) with the Cruise Control activated... I was'nt sure though, It's the 1st time I see a Lockup TC in a 4 speed auto! Now that is RPM reduction!! LOL

Wow, thanks guys for the nice comments on the Mini, it's extremely rare I get some respect from anybody in that thing!

I should make it a nice and quick winter beater as soon as I finish school, depending on my Omni project....
