Linux 3D Desktop (Vista can go to hell)

I have nothing aginast open source and I consider myself computer literate. But I could care less about Linux and all this other stuff because it seems like it's just tinkering for the sake of tinkering which is fine if thats you thing.

Me?

I like XP Pro. I find it stable, I find that it runs all my applications well. It has more than enough customization options for me and has all the support I could ever need. I do put together my own PC using parts that I select ymself and the help of friends but as long as my OS runs what I ask it too and it's stable, I'm happy!

Now being an XP user, I am aware of all the evil things out on the net that want to hack my system and mess up my PC. So I keep a well updated security set (all free downloads: Adaware, Windows Defender, AVG Anti-virus and Antispyware). But thats the price you pay for being the top dog.

As far as price: I paid $30 for my copy of XP PRO at a campus bookstore.

So while I think Linux is neat and all, I don't think its the great hope of future OS's.

what you don't have t a rootkit detector? i have so many spyware, anti-virus stuff on my windows that it takes my computer like 5 minutes to load

openoffice doesn't compare to ms office. but anyways, at home i setup a virtual windows installation using qemu, and an iso image of a windows xp cd. basically i can run windows within linux and run any microsoft proprietary software whenever i need, instead of having to dual boot. i have it setup on a 2nd desktop fullscreen, that way i can just switch desktops and it's as if i'm running both OSes at the same time, which I kind of am. And the performance is great.

the desktop stuff is really cool, i especially like the whole, 4 separate desktops you can flip to thing. Seems like it would really help clear up clutter. If i just download ubuntu can it do that?? You said you use some other stuff to, is that what gives you that ability??

Pretty much any flavor of linux supports multiple desktops, but most of them don't present them to the user as if they're wrapped around a "cube".

You can even get windows programs to give you mulitple desktops if you'd like.

xgl and beryl give me the ability to those things

I have Blacklight Beta. Sorry I forgot about that.

Thats all I need really. No need to go overboard on the porptection if you just use common sense. My PC loads fast and runs great. Been using them all my life and the only time I see PCs get screwed up is when people don't take care and them and download all sorts of crap and garbade what just cripples the OS.

If you are even mildly competent at computing and just follow some basic guidlines, you really won't have a lot of troubles with a PC or the XP OS.

PC protections come a long way. but whatever works man. I'm still paranoid but overall I have no problems. In the 4 years I've had my rig, it's only crashed once (curse you and your buggy code Knights of the Old Republic. So good, yet so buggy)

yeah my world of warcraft demo is not working in xp right now, so i just don't bother with it

linux doesn't handle windows games very well

Just to add a new pic

can you do that with a movie playing on one of the cube sides and it still plays as you stretch it around? also, if you have audio playing on a side and you swap it around, does the sound follow then fade out? just curious.
Have a new IBM server sitting here under my desk I may play with and your little movie has given me some food for thought... very nice. :)

I would imagine that the audio continues to play at full volume. Otherwise you would have to sticky your audio program to all your desktops...whats the point of that?

As for video, good question, but I'm guessing it just takes a screenshot of the desktop and uses that in the animation.

This might sound really stupid, but after reading/seeing all of this, I've always wanted to get into Linux, but never really knew where to start. Anyone have a good starting point or good advice when it comes to Linux?

so, i'm thinking i may try to get a setup just like yours, cuz i think all the stuff you can do is nifty. However, i most likely will need help doing stuff, you mind helping me out??

yes video and audio play throughout

okay, and the problems start. It says that i can just restart my computer with the ubuntu image disc in the drive to run the demo, but that doesn't work. Do i need to go to a bios menu and tell it to boot from the CD??
