Lightened Flywheel. Problems?

We'll I just got about $3,000 from quitting a sport and selling all of my gear, and right now I don't have anything better to do with it than put it into my car. I was thinking that I would get a lightened flywheel installed but I'm quite sceptical about it. What problems does anyone experience when doing this? Any problems with your transmission? Also, which short shifter for the MP5 reduces the most throw? I just drove my brother-in-law's WRX which has a short shifter that reduced the throw by 75% and it was amazing. It made me a bit sad to drive my moster throw MP5 =P.
Thanks,
John

shoot me an email or PM and let me know what you are looking for, i'll put a discount package together for you.

I do want to go the F/I route, but I'm still under my parents roof, and my dad doesn't think that a turbo is good for a 17 year old, which is understandable. The weird thing though, is that he is letting me race it at a strip. Plus I'm $500 in debt to my coach, so with the left over money I really don't think that would be enough to get a turbo running the way I would want it.

*edit- I will definately send an email to you for a package soon, I first need to organize everything that I want to do to my car. I just bought a intake from you and could not be happier with the shipping time.

Kartboy makes the shortest throw for the P5. But the TWM SS is good too. Either one helps. I plan on getting the Kartboy soon. Make sure you get the Kartboy bushings regardless of which SS you choose.

Thanks rjm, I'll give kartboy a look. Can anyone give me any answers on my questions about the lightened flywheel?

car revs quicker and the revs drop faster too during lift throttle. its not nescessary but a good idea would be to put a lightened crank pulley on the other side to kind of balance things out on either end of the crank. you will lose some low end torque with the lighter weight but it shouldnt be real significant.

sounds good, i am glad to hear everything went well with it!

for $2500...hmmm

Tein S-Tech Springs
Tokico Blue Struts
KartBoy SS and Bushings
Ebay CAI
OBX Header
Exhaust w/ whatever money is left.

Have had a fidanza on for the past 20K and no problems......makes smooth driving more difficult but you get used to it......

did not really notice any gains but with my mods i pull about 12 HP over stock and 116.59 ft/lbs of total tq.

wait till you are going to change your clutch to put a new flywheel in.......or if you are putting an aftermarket clutch in.

wish i had 2500$ to spend on mods...if i did I'd go apeshit....come one tax season lets get a move on.

I'm looking at the Kartboy and B&M short shifters, and from what I'm seeing, it says that B&M has the shorter throw. Also I already have a Injen CAI installed and have a 5zigen muffler but am thinking about trashing that and just getting a cat-back kit and I'm definately going to get obx headers soon. I have the car lowered right now but am thinking about getting tokico illumina shocks + springs

Don't waste money on N/A mods. Lots of work, little horsepower gain. Save up a little and get a turbo set up if you can. It is WELL worth it in driveability. You can have a solid 200 + whp car without a TON of money.

For $1,000 that sounds very tempting, but shipping for my stock headers and intake will probally be high, and I won't have any way of getting to school and practice every day until i get the parts. I haven't completely made up my mind yet whether or not I'll save up for a new turbo kit and beg my dad or to just stay N/A.

You coudl buy a stock header and intake to send him instead.

Just a thought...

I wouldnt drop 2.5k on the car unless its on a turbo.
For now, I would do exhaust, intake, shifter and header (if you dont want to turbo anytime soon)

We'll, I'm still waiting for my dad to come home so I can discuss this with him, but he always says something like "Why do you need more horsepower" or "That much speed and a 17 year old don't mix," when in reality I am a very responsible driver on the street, and street racing would not even cross my mind. I always try to explain to him how damn slow a pretty much stock MP5 is but he doesn't really care.

yeah I feel you for begging the dad to let you have a turbo but how he wont agree...my parents are the same way..they dont care what I do with my car as long as I dont F it up...but I always talk about how I want to turbo the car and all this stuff..but you know...im starting college and turbo still does take alot of work...especially if it dosent come stock with the car...(dont flame plz I know our engines do come with a turbo in the Mazdaspeed version)..you may just want to consider little things aka. short shifter, exhaust things, just little things to make the car more fun to drive ie springs, or sway bars n stuff...its like 4 am right now so im prolly just typing some random stuff that dosent make any sense to the point of this thread..but anyway..as long as your car gets you from point a to point b ..mission accomplished...btw what do you run at the track
