Lewis7789 2002 Protege5 build thread (tons of pics)

So I got some online quotes from some junkyards (I just hate that term though) for a KL-G4. There is one for $1460 w/ 31,ooo miles. I tried to talk the salesman down because I don't really want to play THAT much for the motor but with only 31k it sure is tempting...

And it's tough finding an OBD2 KL-G4. But I really think it would be nice to have a completely working and damn close to OEM V6 in the P5. As of now I'm planning on using the 626 wiring harness exclusively and removing the P5 harness. After everything is triple checked and the car has been running okay for a month, of course.

Is there a way to see if a motor is OBD2 with a visual inspection? There are a crap-ton of motors on eBay but the years are always bunched together... But having OBD2 will be kickass to have a MAF and not the VAF ro whatever that is. I'll call some of the engine shops who have sent me quotes and see if I can't get a complete engine harness and ECU along with the motor. That would make life much easier. Till then, the search continues... Good thing I don't have a life. ;)

ps- This eBay listing pic is hilarious. (No, I'm not buying parts off of eBay. Don't worry, fellas.)

Meaning that they're hard to find, or that they're hard to find with OBD2? I'm sure they're hard to find, it's basically brand new, at least in my book, haha.

I'd send this guy, MonoxideChild, a PM and as him. He's like the king of Mazda knowledge, at about 626's and the older F2's and other stuff. Ask about the engine codes and what to look for stamped on the block and cams and stuff. I'm sure he'll know, and off the top of his head, probably, too.

Well, that's what they look like, it's just drawn..

I like the progress you're making!

Ok, crazy idea just occurred to me: what if you bought a running 98-02 626 v6 and took the motor, tranny, etc from that and then put your Protege 2.0 back in it and sold it? (naughty)

Buying and selling a running car is not going to cost as much as buying all these pieces separately. The price difference between the 2.5 and the 2.0 is minimal. I know, it's a lot more work, and lots more room for potential complications, but think of the awesomeness!

Wouldn't be a bad idea if I only had like... one car instead of 4. LOL. Actually... I think you're on to something. Do that, I'll off my P5 and then buy the 626 from you. Haha.

This!!! Great idea Wes.

Oh, Evan....any working vids of the Greddy?

I think buying a running OBD2 626 with a low mileage KLG4 would be much more expensive than buying the motor, harness and ECU. But that is a good idea. But then I'll have to transfer titles and swap TWO motors and engine harnesses. But I'll consider it. I just don't have that kind of cash to buy a low mileage 626 upfront like that. That's kinda why I'm building the motor swap in pieces, a little here and little there out of every pay check. I'm debt free and don't have any credit cards or loans so I like to keep it that way.

Payday is tomorrow so I'll have $1200 ready to pull the trigger on the motor. There are a few KLG4 motors available with low miles, but are much more expensive than the low mileage KLZE's that are everywhere. I'm going to call some shops tomorrow and try to get some more accurate prices. But it sure is tempting to buy the 31k motor for $1400... I've never owned a car with under 100k on it before my P5 and I bought her with 84k.

So it's more research and debating on the KLZE with easier to find parts, more inexpensive and a written out Hot-To or doing it right (in my mind at least) and doing a KLG4 swap and remaining OBD2.

Sorry, Jeff. The videos in my first post are with the GReddy EVO2 cat back and an AEM intake. They aren't the best and all you can really hear is the intake. I didn't take any more video before I took it off. The tone was really nice though, I loved it. Really low and deep. Phen can give his opinion too since he's heard it.

If you are debt free then you ain't American son. lol

I think you've already made up your mind on the KLG4....you just need that extra little kick in the pants to spend the extra on it. *kick* You are welcome. ;) Seeing that you can stay OBDII and avoid any hassles with echeck it would be a no brainer for me, if this was my build.

As for the vids, I couldn't get either to work. When I clicked on them, it took me to your PB page saying that they could not be found?

Remember, if you're doing the swap in the spring, you've got a while to see what comes along. I'm not telling you what to do, just saying don't get so excited you forget your options. It happens to me constantly.

The more available ZE parts are interchangeable with the G4, you know, except the cams because of the difference in hydraulic and solid lifters.

Thanks for the kick, Jeff. You're right, I'll just stick to the KLG4.

And here's a link to the videos. I hope it works. I'll fix the destination to the first page tonight.

You are welcome and thanks for the link. I'll check it out at home when I can access photobucket. But I must say after hearing your CS during the cruise....my mind may as well be made up....just need a kick. hahahahaha

Thanks Wes. I know most of the parts will swap over from all the KL's. I was just hoping to have at least the motor to work on before it got too cold in the garage. But I'm sure Phen won't mind it in the basement. Muhaha!

Jeff, what do you mean? That you like or dislike the CorkSport?

Evan...meant that I really liked what I heard. A cat would be a necessity for emissions peace of mind as well as keeping Tamz off my back. lol I can only imagine what yours sounded like w/o the cat.

No luck with photobucket right now....for some reason when I try to open pb or youtube I get connection failures. I'll keep trying though.

Yeah, you could do some serious port work if you dremeled that stuff all winter! Heck, custom fab an intake mani, you'll be making a butt-ton of power.

Emissions is only once a year, or once every two years.... (naughty)

Once every year here and unless I found a place willing to *overlook* particulars it would save me some headache. And even moreso it would save me more headaches with Tam. CS + intake - second cat = one unhappy wife who will refuse to drive the car.

Ahh, I'm pretty safe, my mom won't even get in either of my cars because she insists they're too low! I guess she isn't hard core and doesn't hang out in the slammed thread...

Well, the Corksport Power Series exhaust sounds heavenly with the stock pre-cat "header". But as you know the CS eliminates your midpipe and main cat. With my header on and the CS is was crazy loud and raspy so I put a Magnaflow cat in it to remove the raspiness and for E-Check. It really wasnt that difficult to add a cat after I finally figured out all the exhaust clamp dimensions and stuff. The cat was about $55 from Summit Racing and the clamps were about $8 each, IIRC. You could always go with the CS, leave your precat in and add the Magnaflow for E-Check. Or honestly, I would probably just pay the extra $200 for the highflow CS cat to be welded in. Then you can just bolt it all up, pass emissions every year and the wife will be happy. But I still liked my GReddy EVO2 more...

Dude... you're lucky you got the suspension. I wouldn't try to push any more buttons... Heh.

Yeah, no plans on putting a header in so that will def. help (should have a Ractive installed now.....damn me for selling it!). If I do go with the CS, I'd probably just pay the extra for that second cat to be welded in from the get go. First things first though, I need to get outside and start poking away at the soft spost in the stock exhaust. (evil)

I know, right? But you know me....I love pushing her buttons. (poke) No plans on replacing the exhaust until the stock one starts to rot away but when I do I'll push for the 'upgrade'. Hopefully I'll have my mind made up when the time comes. hahaha

I agree us Silver P5 owners have to stick together. heres mine
