Let's pretend I wanted my exhaust pipe to stay shiny...

(MS3) Still pretty new to this car - about 2500 miles now. Reading a whole lot here, it seems this car runs rather rich. I've always had turbo cars and never had this issue. What, if any, mods would make this car run a little less rich with a lesser amount of carbon build up? I washed my car and within 200 miles the exhaust pipe was black again.

I don't even wash my exhaust tip. Why bother? Kinda reminds me of washing the bottom of your shoes to keep them shiny.

Think of it more like shining your dress shoes.
You don't wear a suit and then wear dirty worn shoes. It completely ruins the look.

i just clean it whenever i wash my car. other then that, mine doesn't really get too black (hks cbe). but when i did have my stocker, that thing looked a lot filthier than my hks in comparison.

I've got lots of rags destined to be exhaust tip rags. I have one out at all times in my garage so I can wipe it everyday when I get home from work. Anal? Yes :)

I used Meguiars Metal Polish, works well and provides some basic protection so the soot doesn't stick. The pressure wash was strong enough to get the exhaust clean even 2 weeks after application.

Eagle One Nevr-Dull to clean.

Turtle Wax chrome polish to shine.

I've done this everytime I wash the car and it's worked wonders for me.

Man, I can't even get the soot off my exhaust, and I've tried so many times. I'm gonna have to try out these products, see if they help me any.

wouldn't a retune help this, at least somewhat?

Thats a slippery slope. The MS3 isn't burning extra gasoline for fun; it needs it to cool the combustion charge. That being said, a short ram or cold air intake seems to lean out combustion enough to keep the tip clean for some people on this board.

The "zoom zoom boom boom" tendency of this engine has been caused by people heavily modding with a stequiometric fuel equation in mind. You just can't do that on a turbo'd car running 9.5 compression.

I guess somehow I didn't know the compression was that high, I guess with boost capability and compression that high what you're saying makes perfect sense. The other option would be to stoich it out and run meth injection 24/7... but at that point you're building more of a track car in my eyes.

i just leave mine black now... losing battle. :)

i'm even starting to dig the braked dust on my wheels...

one of those 'black chrome' style tips might be an answer...
