Left it running..

I had forgotten that back a couple years ago when we were looking at cars we stopped by the local Mazda dealer just as they were closing up. They made sure we had parked outside their lot and told us to feel free to keep looking around and then the employees slowly left.
It is in a fairly noisy area and as I walked up to a Mazda3 I thought I smelled something like a hot car engine. I got closer and sure enough the car was running and unlocked. The hood was pretty hot to the touch so it must have been running for quite some time. They had no security people around and it was the push button start model so I just pushed the button to turn it off. When we got home I emailed them to tell them that someone left a car running.
Probably not the best way to break in an engine.

My Mini w/ convenience package beeps when the key leaves the cabin. But only once, inside. Doors can be locked as well.

I had a rental Altima where the rental guy took off with the fob while I was in the car idling. It sounded an alarm and flashed a visible warning on the readout under the gauges. I was thinking if I drove off the car would shut down once too far. Now I am wondering what would have happened if I just drove away?

It wouldn't have shut down, it just wouldn't have restarted after you shut it down.

If the battery in your key fails you have to hold it right up next to the button to get it to start and so I'd guess in that situation once you moved the key away from the button the dash warnings would come on but the car would keep running.

One of the early complaints from reviewers of cars with these type of keys involve situations where you end up swapping drivers on the car and forget to swap the key. I don't know if the early versions in other cars didn't have warning lights or if you just hopped out of the car in your driveway and left it running you wouldn't see the warning and then your significant other got in to drive off if the warning would have subsided by that point.

A cool feature, I think, is if you leave a key in the car it won't let that key start the car until a button on it has been pressed. So if you need to hide a key or your wife decides to leave her purse in the car someone can't come along and just get in and push the start button without finding the key first.

Man...
You know we're getting a little too complacent when this silly little feature is causing us to forget to shut the car down before exiting. That is just ridiculous.

I have a Touring w/o the proximity smart key feature. If the fob leaves the vehicle, the "key" dummy light in the inst. cluster will turn red. I'm not sure about any beeping, though.

I have wondered how long it will run w/o a key in it. I guess it will run indefinitely?

I have a GT with tech package and this winter I've had to start my cx5 to let it warm up on a couple of occasions so far. I can say on the GT with tech package there is a beeping from outside the car that's pretty hard to miss and as you get out of the cabin as well as a noise that sounds inside. You can lock the all the doors using the key that slides out from inside the fob which is a nice feature and if you have the fob with you you are still able to open the hatch even with all the other doors locked (I really like both of these features as with my previous car using the key on the door would only operate the driver door lock and the trunk would not open unless the car was not running ). The buttons on the fob will not lock or unlock the doors if the vehicle is running so your stuck using the key only. All in all I think it's a well thought out keyless system and at least with my experience does exactly what it needs to.

Agreed with your comments on GT keyless system, some of the suggestions I see here are unproven and potentially dangerous.

the problem is with the regular keyless entry NOT the advanced keyless entry like on the GT.
regular keyless entry there is no warning outside the vehicle and you can not lock/unlock or even use the panic feature of the remote if the car is running.
