Launching a MSP?

:
2003.5 Laser Blue MSP
This might seem like a stupid question, but ill ask anyway. What is the best way to launch a MSP. Drop the clutch at what rpm??. I dont like racing from stand still, because i know our trannys and lsd is not that strong, but I raced a 2002 1.8l golf with a 3" catback and 13psi, and I lost by 3 cars, and I especially got owned in first and second gears, i was like wtf?

With my mods dropping the clutch will just produce uncontrollable wheelspin. Personally I would rev to about 3.5k. Slip the clutch some. Try that out, it really depends on modifications (if any).

tell me if i'm wrong but 1.8T's aren't that slow. 13 psi is usually considered high boost so the car was prolly putting down some pretty good numbers.

but definitely don't dump the clutch, there's too much torque down low so all you'll get is wheelspin/wheelhop. i rarely launch but i find that around 3k produces a decent launch. i'll let the clutch out about halfway to grab initially and slip it the rest of the way while giving it more gas.

yeah.. i rev it to about 3500 and then release the clutch about half of the way to let it grip. then depending if i want a harder launch or not, i'll ease off the clutch faster or slower.

It matters what kind of tires you are running and what you are doing exactly. Are you drag racing on a drag strip? Are you taking off fast from a stoplight?

It all depends on what you are doing.

do not drop the clutch!!! Redline the b**** & hold it there until you hear silly noises.....

It was at a stop light. I prefer racing from a roll, but the guy was a b**** and didnt want to . And my tires and Dunlop Graspic DS2.

slip the clutch from about 2k that's the best way to launch these cars without destroying your clutch too much.

If you launched it at 2k I suspect the thing would fall right out of the power band. The best way to get any launch is to abuse the Shheeeeet out of the clutch fairly steady power with the throttle high rpm and use the clutch as a throttle, this helps prevent wheel spin and gives you an excellent launch, however you really beat the bunch out of the clutch. I've taken it very easy on my launches though and I pulled my 15,000 mile clutch out the other day and it looked very good, put a new stock one back in anyway since I had it apart. I see that someone mentioned chatter, is this a noise that the car makes when you pull off? And if so can this be prevented by better torqueing the clutch on and surfacing the flywheel?

My car launchs best at around 2700-3000, it doesn't wheelhop or spin it just grabs and goes. I remember when I had the stock clutch/LSD/Motor Mounts it would scare me to launch b.c it felt like the engine was going to come out of the hood. I dont know how much I am really helping b.c I am not stock trannywise anymore. But with the stage 3, awr f/r, and the quaife thats how I do it lol

For refrence, my friends had a little race and a MSP with unichip with ebc , intake, smic/hardpipes, and CS exhast put 2 cars on my friend with a 1.8T. The 1.8T has an intake, 3" downpipe, upgraded BPV and someother valve that helps with boost, REVO chip with 20psi , and he also has the SPS2 controller to change the timing and maps for higher octane fuel. My other friend had an EVO with a larger FMIC/Charge pipe, and a BOV and the 1.8T was dead even with him. The MSP put over 2 cars on the Evo as well . The 1.8T now has a full turbo back exhaust and pulls a lot harder. I think it would be a good match up for the MSP again.

MSP > 1.8T = Evo (2thumbs)

lol according to him he has more top end now so we will see. I would like to see the outcome lol

the best way for me is to hold rpm at 2.5-3k then ease clutch 1/2 way and hold the gas at about 1/4-1/2 way until you reach second gear then you could maybe go balls to the walls depends how much power your car is putting out.if second gear spins a lot then go easy on the gas and you should be fine.
