Id you have the latest issue (January 2002). On page 48 in the left column at the bottom, they mention an engine upgrade for the MP3. Possibly a 180bhp version due out next year. Now what is Mazda upto and being that the article was written by the some "international editor" this could be true, only time will tell. One thing is for sure though, I'm willing to bet that there will be some sort of MP model if not the MP3, released next year. I feel like a 2.5 RS owner who keeps hearing rumors about the WRX being released.

The euro spec mp3 had a 175Hp... so 180 will not be some big deal. I mean they are already pushing 175 with cams, and ecu so they might just bring those two parts over here.....

I wonder how close the Japanese Spec FS and the Focus SVT motor are to each other. The SVT uses the same styled dual stage intake manifold. I don't know if it's identical to the FS intake manifold we use. From what I know the Japanese spec FS gets it's power from the different intake cam, different compression via pistons, ecu timing, not sure whart octane gas they use over there and who know's exactly what else is done. Anyone know if the FS-ZE has variabe valve timing?

You mean something like this?
hehe, this is a pic of the sport 20 in japan

Cool, that means my speculation of the FS-ZE having variable valve timing is correct. That also means that Ford completly bit off of Mazda once again. Having the vaiable valve timing on the intake cam is where the extra ummfff comes from. :D

Ok, dumb question. Is there any way to add variable valve timing to our engines? I know it would be a difficult upgrade if it were possible. If so, how much would it cost?

Before I bought a MP3, I was VERY close to buying a EBP Civic Si. Only thing that made me not do it was that they're used and to make it look good, a lot of work needs to go into it (rims, body kit, suspension) which we already have. But I'd really like something similar to VTEC.

VVT has something to do with switching cam lobes at higher RPMs to keep the intake/overlap higher, correct?

Anyone have pricing info on this more powerful MP3...any confirmation besides the R&T article?

Thanks

Nope, I couldn;t find any pricing. It might be a while before we get any real info on any kind of MP3 to come. Everything till then will just be speculation.

Corksport does sell the FS-ZE motor. If I'm guess right, the ZE distinction on the FS-ZE stands for something similar to Fords Zetec. :p Remember...this is me guessing again so who knows. Maybe someone should call Corksport and ask if the motor they sell has VVT. ;)
