Hi I bought a 2010 Mazda 3 2.0L and noticed the "L" stamping on the engine block along with FoMoCo. Is this the same motor they put in the Ford Focus?
Thanks
Thanks
yes and no, its a mazda motor but the newer focus motor are also built by mazda BUT "critical" parts are not interchangeable, mazda is not owned by ford and it never was just a "partnership" (as in take money from another company ala ford)
Not true. Ford owned enough of Mazda at one time to have controlling interest under Japanese ownership laws (I was told it was 41%). However, Ford has recently sold most of its share of Mazda, so it no longer has controlling interest (I've heard it's something like 13%). Mazda and Ford still share parts and technology - for instance, the Mazda 3 is built on the Ford C1 platform, which is shared with the Focus.
I believe it was actually 33%, but yes the 13% current interest sounds right. Mazda actually bought a fair portion of FoMoCo's former shares so I believe they now have their own controlling interest. The platform is also shared with the Volvo S40/V50.
Like wanna3 said the MZR is a Mazda designed engine which Ford uses. I'm pretty sure all of it's applications are slightly altered from the actual Mazda MZR, but overall it's pretty similar. I'm pretty sure the fusion/milan/...er and Mercury version (whatever it's called) use the same engine as well, at least for the 4 cyl version.
