Knock sensor danger zone?

If I were to monitor knock using my DashHawk, what would be the "safe" region, what would be the "OK, you're pushing it" zone, and where would be "oh crap"?

Thanks :D

I'm not sure if anyone knows for sure but I can tell you that I have my warning set at 3 and when that happens I let off the gas.

Knock retard is under Mazda-Spark.

KR is not actual knock per se, it's the ecu retarding the timing BECAUSE it's detected knock. So a KR of 3 means the ecu is retarding the ignition timing by 3 degrees to try and eliminate the knock. 3 degrees is not much really and certainly ain't gonna 'cause your motor to blow but that's where I set my warning at ... used to have it a 4 actually at first.

So getting random warnings of 1 or 2 is worrying over nothing. I can keep my foot down??

So...no matter what % of knock is detected the ECU will pull that % of timing?

Well, yes and no.

Yes, the ecu will retard the timing to try and protect the motor but no one knows what happens if the knock gets to a dangerously high level. In other words, it may get to a point where no matter how much the timing is retarded it won't make a bit of difference.

You've gotta remember too that the timing retard happens AFTER the detection of knock. So by the time the ecu takes action, the knock has in fact already happened. That's why I've always preached you have a kr warning on this engine and set it low enough so that it warns you BEFORE it get's into a dangerously high level and you know to let off the gas and take the load off the engine.

The only 2 gauges I know that have good warnings are the Aeroforce and the Dashhawk. The Aeroforce has 2 bright red LED lights that shine at your set warning but no audible warning. I have mine placed at the top of the meter hood so I always see it. The Dashhawk has a visual warning as well and I believe an audible one if you place it outside of your line-of-sight.

My opinion is yes. These engines seem to knock quite a bit and I'm sure there are a ton of stock cars out there that get kr all the time and that the drivers don't even know about it.

Having said that, how do you know it's not getting worse if you keep your foot down? Are you looking at the gauge all the time? Can't keep 1 eye on the gauge and 1 on the road so set up your warning and keep both eyes on the road and be sure you can notice the warning if it happens. (2thumbs)

I had my dashhawk set for audible and flashing warnings at 1kr or 2kr for the longest time..... I was always paranoid over blowing up. Now I am learning and realizing that it's not that serious. I think I'll keep it at 3kr.

Audible and flashing warnings ftw!! For DH people, just set 2 warnings with the same parameters to different colors and let the fun being!

Yep...that's how mine is set up. :)

I still lift my foot if I see >1 degree of KR. Just because it's doing it doesn't mean that I want to push it...

Yep! Everyone with mods should be doing this IMHO - could end up saving your motor for the cost of less than $300.

Think I got my used for $175 or something. Looked and works BRAND NEW, came in box and everything. They're out there.

What are you waiting for GO GET ONE!

Audiable warning on DashHawk...? What are you guys talking about?
I've never read anything in the manual that the DashHawk has audiable warnings...

Care to enlighten...?

I set my KR to set off at 2.0
Really, anything above 2.0 is not desirable... If you see KR at any level, lift your foot off the throttle!!

I don't personally know alot about engines in reference to knock. I know it's something you don't want, but i'm not sure I understand where it comes from, and how to prevent it.

I do know that i'm interested in modding the car, and realize I need something to monitor the changes.

Knock may not be something you need to monitor unless you're running maps or new tunes right? The stock tune could compensate safely for just an intake and light bolt ons correct?

Yes, I will take care of this. I believe when you go to staggered settings or warnings or whatever, you choose what you are monitoring (KR for instance) and then they give you level 1, 2, and warning. Forget about 1 and 2, set your warning where you want to be notified and it also gives an audible warning. Let's say you also set that to the green color. Go make the exact same setup in another slot, but make it blue in color. Now it will flash and make noise.

Tah-dah!

People are getting KR on bone stock cars...you really need to monitor knock on MS3s... For some strange reason, many owners get a mysterious knock in the 3,000-4,000 RPM range at part (light) throttle.

Also, if you out anything less than 93 octane, you will get knock at WOT.
