Keeping my car clean - wax

Been washing my 3-month old MS3 once a week. Happy with the results, but feel like I'm ready for the next step in car maintenance.

I'm looking into waxing. Are there any particular kinds of wax that I should look for for an MS3?

I like Meguiars NXT. Easy on and off with good results. Here's the last car I even bothered to wax.

Follow this simple rule: The more effort you put into it, the better the results. With that being said, stay away from any wax product marketed to the lazy man (i.e., spray on wax, wash-n-waxes)

You can get good results from any mid-level wax out there. I have experience with Zaino and Griot's Garage stuff and love em both. Just stay away from turtle wax and other cheap auto-zone stuff. There's a good list of products somewhere on this forum (the main mazda forum, not just the MS3).

Also, get a good clay bar. I clayed my car one week after taking delivery from the dealer and it was amazing how much crap was on the surface, and how smooth it felt afterwards.

I go with the NXT as well. More expensive but how often do you wax your car? I picked it because it was the only one that said it helped block UV rays, and my car is red!

i agree with all of the above... the harder it is to put on and take off... the longer it will last on the car... i like anything by meguires. been using their stuff for years... i just gave mine a coat of hi-tech 20....at least most of it... threatened rain, so i will get the rest of it next wash...

i prefer to put it on with my small 6" orbital waxer/polisher... then remove by hand... i prefer the pasted over the liquid, but both work fine...

haven't tried the NXT, but just picked up a bottle....

man, that CWP with a coat of wax is so sweeeeeet! :)

The Meguiars NXT is great. Its $16-$17 a bottle where I am at but the bottle lasted me over a year waxing 2 cars many many many times.

what? no, completely untrue. A good product goes on and comes off easy. An example of that is Megs21 synthetic sealant. Applies thin, and removes extremely easy, and depending on climate and how often the car is clean you can get 4-5 months out of it.

and the difference b/w a liquid and a paste is just that. Ones a liquid ones a paste. Some people prefer to use a liquid for machine application, others use paste because they prefer to apply products by hand. It all depends on preference.

Personally I prefer paste waxes. Pinnacle Signature series II, and ive recently picked up some Dodo Juice waxes. Its a wax company from England and have recently started selling their products here. Great waxes, Insane beading, and well see how the durability is as I just got done putting on two more layers.

If you want a good paste wax thats relatively cheap, looks great, applies easily, and is extremely durable i suggest you check out Pinnacle SigII. Its about 35 a jar. Its a true wipe on wipe off wax, so it doesnt have to dry or haze on the finish.

is it true there's a special/better wax for black paint?
sort of. Paint is paint, and a wax is wax, if that makes any sense.

Certain waxes are blended for specific colors, or to enhance certain colors. Some waxes are meant for lighter colors, some meant for darker colors. However you can use whatever wax on whatever color car.

this is meant more for higher end wax companies, (not the kind found at your local auto parts store)

Makers like swissvax and zymol have certain waxes which have different ratio of ingredients, and different blends of waxes to enhance certain colors. Some waxes will make metallic flakes pop, some will mute flakes. Some carnubas give a warm glow, while others give crystal clear clarity and gloss.

Dodo Juice, and british wax company makes some higher end waxes (in the 60$ range) which are color charged. For example their hard wax called blue velvet has a special blend of waxes and dyes which are meant to enhance dark colored cars. Now this doesnt mean you can use it on a silver car. You can, and it will work just fine and will look great. Let me see if I can find the link that talks about color charging.

How the car looks is 90% prep (proper paint polishing) and 10% wax.

i concede... the new waxes are much easier to put on... that was more of an issue back a few years, when the 'lazy man' rage was in full force... some of that stuff would just wash right off the car!

^definitely. I try to tell people who hate waxing because its hard or takes them really long to do, that it really isnt that hard at all if the right products are used, and the proper steps are taken.

For example, a clayed surface is much easier to wax. Most people who dont clay or who have never clayed struggle when they apply wax because the applicator drags, and the product doesnt bond to the clearcoat fully.

Most products on the shelf today go on and come off pretty easy. NXT removes nicely and applies easily but stains trim badly. Same with Gold class. both good at what they do, but there are better products out there.

my aboive questions sounded a bit dumb... i meant to ask quality wise, what is the difference between a paste and liquid version of the same wax?

Anyhow the NXT will stain your trim. I got some on mine. Anyone know how to get it off?

i totally agree.. i do the clay thing on my cars every now and then... not all the time.. it sure makes a wax job work better. one thing about a wax that goes on and removes easily... you are more apt to do it more often..

that's good to know about the NXT clogging up plastic trim.. i'll still try it, i guess. have to be careful.. the meguires i use doesn't seem to do that, i'll get the exact number from it next time i'm out in the garage....

come over to the detailing section, you'll pick up a few product and technique tips.

I have quite a bit of turtle wax I.C.E. I'm gathering from this thread that it is garbage?

+55 For Nxt gen wax. I also wash, clay-bar, then use the wax and it looks great.

If you really wanted a shine like no other, go to autogeek.net and pick up some pinnacle, dp or wolfgang. But for most, 30 to tons of $ is not needed to be spent in wax all the time.

For the nxt gen wax trim. On my P5 I get some on the roof rack once in while. I normally take some window cleaner and a soft tooth brush to it and it takes most of the wax out.
