Kartboy bushings installed!

I undertook my first installtion of a mod today. It should have been more simple than it turned out but ill get to that.

About a month ago i ordered a Kartboy shortshifter and bushings from the US, then a couple of days later i had an accident and broke my baby. I only just got her back last friday. Luckily i had insurance. Anyhow, today i put the car up on ramps and went about installing the bushings. I ran into a problem almost straight away. My aftermarket exhaust had a heat shield which completely stopped the removal of the arm the bushings are on. I tried wiggling it, even attempted forcing it but couldnt get the arm off the screw. Finally i used my brain and realised the heat shield could come off, and off it came! Minus a screw as i accidently snapped the head of it because it was a little corroded. The arm came off easily now and i pushed the rubber bushing out using the bolt as a punch. Then i put the new kartboy bushings on in the correct order reusing the spindle from the old bushings. I tightened it back up and found a bolt that fit the heat shield clamps nut, and put it back on. Then i worked out how to use a torque wrench and torqued the bolt on the bushings to the correct level. Hopefully i won't have any problems. Definitely noticed the shift straight away. It is more precise and feels sweet. Tomorrow morning i will attempt doing the short shifter. Need to go and buy some silicone grease though :)

All in all i was a happy man after my first project :D

Just wait until you get the short shifter in place. It will feel so much better.

Make you get a good pair of snap ring plyers for the shifter install.

Nice pics. Out of curiosity the snap ring pliers are the ones that have the little bit sticking downwards dont they? Got a big picture of them just incase dad has them in the tool box and i can save myself some money?

Hey U Guys (and girls).
I been thinking of getting the Kartboy shortshifter and bushing. But on Corksport, it says, that the stock shiftknob maybe wont fit :( Is that true of just a trick to sell a Kartboy shiftknob?? I hope Ull answer, cause I live in Denmark, so it a long way of shipping, just to find out i wont fit.

Ohh. I have a 2001 Protege5 :)

If you look at the pictures that I posted above you wil see the stock shift knob is used.

They two guys that own Kartboy have a yellow P5 them selves. The stock shift knob of the Protege and the Protege5 are a perfect fit. The MP3 & MSP have different threads and you can order the shifter from Kartboy with those threads if you want to use an MSP shift knob.

Other wise the Kartboy shifter comes with Protege5 stock threads.

Good on ya for finally getting it done mate!

Must be shifting in happyland eh!(2thumbs)

Anyone know what size the nut is for the Bushings????

Ive stripped mine and prolly will have to cut it to get it out!

that may be true because corksport may only have, for example, the msp threaded shifters. but if you go to kartboy.com and order, they can get you the p5 one for sure.

I want the kartboy bushings but my question is will it work with the ball bearing TWM shifter cuz thats what i have.

yes it will, many people have different shortshifters but the kartboy bushings. either way, you will end up with great results

Yes it will work. The bushing goes up at the front of the linkage near the tranny itself and the shifter connects on the other end of that linkage between the seats.

Check out the pics that I posted above. If you are still confused then go directly to the KARTBOY website and read the how to. That should also help.

Mission successful on the shortshifter, although i installed it the wrong way around first go lol.

Anyway, the throw is excellent, but it feels really stiff going from 4th to 5th. All the other gears engage fine, but getting it out of the gate on 4th feels very grippy. I lubed alot so i dont think its that. Might try and work between 4th and 5th more tomorrow to wear it in a little bit more

yeah i dunno if it loosened up, or i got some muscle... anywho the shifter works best when you just push the shifter to where you want it (rather tahn locating gates etc)

Yer maybe im just unco and cant find the gear properly. I love the slamming feeling between gears. Makes me feel like a rally driver with a sequential box ^^ ahhh the dreams of youth ;p

it loosens up...i put some silicon lube at first cause i thought it was TOO stiff. but now it goes real smooth. so smooth that i sometimes think the shifter is gonna break (i use alot of force).
