KABOOM.... well it was fun while it lasted

If you increased the hp output of the car then if it breaks, it breaks. You pay for it. I had my first 03.5 get towed in with a broken diff. The sad part is it had the updated diff. already from the factory......

ok well i started last night, spent a long time. Ive got everything out aside from the tranny, starter and axles. I think i screwed up big though. gettng the ball joint/control arm out from the wheel assembly I had no pickle forks, only flatheads screw drivers and some other stuff, so i did it the fun way and smart me put a small tear in one of the boots and a big of greasy stuff oozed out like a ghostbusters scene lol so now i guess i gotta add that to the list of things to repair. can those be rebuilt or do i need an entire new one? should have the transmission out after work today :)

If you just take the front bolt out and the back bolt loosened in the lower control arm you don't have to mess with the ball joint. The lower control arm removal also will not need an alignment afterwards.

sure could have used that yesterday lol so if the rubber boot is torn will i need an enirely new balljoint or can i get a new boot on there somehow?

the tranny is pretty much ready to come out, all mounts are removed, all bolts holding it to the engine are out, only axles and the starter to go. now that im all parnoid about breaking more stuff, is there an easy way to get the drivers side axle out? last time i pulled an axle from a tranny i didnt have to worry about reusing it, so it was taken out rather brutishly. there doesnt seem to be alot of room to get something to pry it away from the trans without damaging the seal on it. any pointers would be appreciated.

btw 22mm vs 24mm axles eh, i guess that means i have to reuse my current tranny or i will have to get a set of normal protege axles as well. will that have any effect on the differential i put in ? is there anybody with a normal protege differential in a MS

oh and it went out at 55,000k. If it broke earlier before i started modding i would have had the right to get a new lsd, but i was just happy to make it this far with it considering all the work its been through :)

55K....so your warranty is up anyway right?

Jeff, the axle spindles are the same for all proteges I think, the actual shaft between the two joints is what's thicker. I used the included lugnut removal tool to pry the axle off.

sweet, thats what got the ball joint/ controll arm off with the help of a flathead.

i got a question, i spoke to a mechanic and he said (though not his professional opinion) that I wont have a problem with the ripped boot. he said it is so barely punctured he doubts it wil have to much on an impact of the life of the joint and doubted much would get in there.i dont know if thats right cause from what i know if a seal has a hole then water and crap would love to get in there. i dont know anything about ball joints, does this sound like it can hold out ok or should i stop being such a cheap ass or ?

but where, where where? everyplace i phone talks to me like im some dumbass looking for a new boot lol

sweet thanks, im gonna stop by mazda on the way home and see if they have any lying around.

thats what your talking about right

I think I mentioned the idea of welding the lsd last year and Turfburn did it to his. As far as I know he hasn't driven it yet. Does anyone know of someone who has welded their lsd and driven hard and long with success?

im talking about the part with grease oozing in that pic that connects to the bottom of the wheel assembly and the control arm. whatever thats called (i was told ball joint)

you are correct lower balljoint. there are 2 upper balljoint and lower ball joint you need lower.

need thoughts / opinions on phantom grip LSD. i can buy one tonight, but is it crap? i know its not as good for autoX but i have no intentions of going autoX. does it fit onto an existing diff or is it a whole new one?

ok half the f'in posts from searches are pro phantom, half the f'ing post are against phantom. theres a 10 sec 323 running 10s with the phantom, but some other people are saying its complete s***, what do you guys think, my cars a useless f'ing paperweight, i had to walk like 10 blocks to a f'ing trainstation to get home from work today. this sucks and i dont even know what part i should buy lol

Spend the money and get the original LSD, have it welded for strength so you don't have to worry about the housing coming apart again.
