K04 Smoking... Thinking of GT3071R upgrade

So today I finished my DP install and went to a local exhaust shop to have a flange welded onto my custom single 3" Apexi N1 exhaust to mate up perfectly to the DP. After this the turbo starts to smoke like there is no tomorrow. I am really not going to take all the mods off to take it into the dealer for warranty work and would rather just upgrade the turbo than go through the hassle of removing and re-installing. What do you guys think? GT3071R good upgrade or bad choice... Ill be boosting it moderately because I do not have an ems and am waiting for a standalone to come out which the procede looks like the solution.

Mods in sig BTW

Chime in guys!

The 3071 is a great choice, it hits full boost around 3000 rpm so the car may not feel as fast off the line but it will pull like crazy once it is spooled. If you want a little more low end and faster spool the 2871 would be a better choice and would still be able to provide power up to 400 horses. I would also suggest getting an XEDE along with it so you can take full advantage of having that turbo.

Depends on your goals. do you want more low end or top end. GT28 should be a better street turbo, while the 3071 will give you more options for growth when a better fuel pump is released

I was thinking more along the lines of the 3071 because it has more room for upgrade down the line. I do plan on getting an ems but which one is the question that i am dealing with. The 2871 is something I feel would be a waste of money as for $100 more i can get a better turbo with a lot more potential. I dont mind the spool at 3000rpm's either. Do you think i will be alright with the stock ecu?

My goals are high... still waiting a standalone that the ms6 community is desperately needing. I would get the mrlilguy fuel pump after the turbo to avoid fuel cut. Thats why I was thinking the 3071 is better all around because it has room to grow.

keep the boost at stock levels, have a wideband and boost gauge at the bare minimum in the car and you should be safe for the most part on the stock ecu. if you don't plan on going with an EMS right now, a fuel pump at the very least cannot hurt.

Protege Garage...... lol, i was going to order it from you guys as a matter of fact because of your excellent service all the other times I have ordered stuff. I will be calling you guys today to speak more about it and what road I should take.

yea i need the turbo first.... i am going to get an ems soon there after... but i wont be WOT when the new turbo is in. It will be set on low boost until I can get a good tune.

YOICHI do you have an ems with you 3071? if not have you been experiencing any issues?

Just bought the GT3071R from ken at protege garage.... always great service there and ken knows his stuff.

Cant wait to put it in when it comes in

Let us know how everything goes for ya. I wanna do this myself... but also need to keep the car for as long as humanly possible. So I need to keep it somewhat reliable. Maybe Ill just get a daily... and have this be my track monster or my weekend car. Hmm *scratches head*

if you want a more stock looking turbo you could go with the K04 rebuild we do - warranty safe in that they don't know what they are looking at per se.

Im pretty sure it will be reliable because i will not be running full boost until i get a fuel pump and ems. So for now low boost.

how much boost are u planning on running 8-10 psi to be safe?? im thinking of getting this turbo and running it on low boost as well.

Yea im planning on running it around 10-12psi to be safe until I get a tuning solution. Running 10-12 psi on the GT3071 is like running 14-16 psi on the K04. So im pretty confident I will be fine. I will also be buying the mrlilguy fuel pump to run with this turbo to be safe from fuel cut.
