K&N HP-1002 Oil Filter Gasket

2007 Mazdaspeed 3
Hello,

I'm new to the forum as I just recently baught a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 with 49,000 on it. Wow is all I can really say. This car is one fun ride! (drive2)

Anywho, I just changed the oil on it the other day and ended up using a K&N HP-1002 oil filter. I oiled up and placed the gasket on it and then hand tightened it to the oil filter housing (Yes, the previous owner had the spin on conversion done). Once I had the new oil in and started up the car, I watched for leaks. After a few minutes, oil started coming out from the housing/filter interface where the gasket is at. I figured I just needed to tighten it a bit, so I did... Now, I had more oil coming out and the gasket could be seen pushing out from the interface. (eek2) At this point I turned off the car, removed the gasket (it was completely pushed out, so I cut it off), and tightened it up without the oil filter gasket in place. After that, I had no problems.

So now my questions. Has anybody else encountered this problem before? And will not having the gasket in place cause any unforseen issues? I would think leaking could be an issue, but now that I think about it, the old oil filter didn't seem to have a gasket on it either and it performed just fine with no signs of leakage. Over the next few days I will be keeping an eye on it to make sure no leaks are developing. Please advise.

Thanks!

The spin-on filter already has a gasket. What do you mean by "... placed the gasket on it ..."? If you put a gasket on it, that's your problem. If the previous gasket didn't come off with the filter, that could be the problem. Always make sure the old gasket doesn't get left on the mount. This can happen when the gasket wasn't oiled prior to filter installation.

Oh, sorry. WELCOME ABOARD!

Yeah, I'm an asshole. The old gasket was still on there and still is. So far no leaks, so I'm just going to keep an eye on it. What I meant by "placed the gasket on it" was that I put the new gasket on the new filter. It fell off the filter while in the box. Thanks for the input, even though I should have known better. Everything else is running like a charm. I have the infamous smoking turbo, but I put in Mobile 1 5w40 TDT and so far everything looks good. Still thinking about the PTP fix though.

Yeah double gasketing is the problem.. I have seen that kill an engine from a oblivious car tech when I worked at Ford..

And please do excuse my ignorance on a lot of this stuff. I feel more confindent in my knowledge of how our cars operate as each day passes, but I'm by no means a mechanic. Though eventually, I would like to get pretty good at this and have some fun with this car.

OK, that makes sense. Therefore, in my case:

No Oil Leak = No Boom!

As I mentioned, I removed the pushed out gasket but the old one is still on there. No leaks have been found though. I just didn't know if any other underlying problems could occur. Worries = over. Thanks guys.

Well, I know for sure there is only one gasket on there since I took the one that was getting pushed out, off. Then, since the K&N has the 1" nut, I tightened it fairly snug and the leaking stopped. This was all done while the car was running and up on the ramps. I've taken my flashlight and looked at it every few days and haven't seen any oil leaking from the interface and on to the filter. And of course, just been keeping an eye on the oil level too. I'll just keep doing that until I change the oil again. Which will give me a reason to peak at that sweet engine more often and think about the things I would like to do to it (shady)

Don't think I've ever pulled a filter out of the box and found the gasket floating loose. Glad you got it resolved. Remember, hand tight plus 1/2-3/4 turn.
