k&n filter

i asked this in another thread but got no responses, so i figured id make a new thread for it. would there be any performance benfits from replacing the filter system after the MAF with a k&n filter? i know they take in more air, but wouldnt it be taking in hotter air here than at the stock filter's position? id like to eventually get a CAI, but wondered if just putting on the k&n was a cheaper way to gain a bit of performance before then.

Cheap Intake

I was looking to do the same thing as that but i realized that the filters that fit the P5 are about 55-60 bucks. **** that. Im not paying that for just an air filter. Go on ebay. i found intakes for 30 bucks....whole intakes not just a filter. check out ebay first man.

well the question is does the thing work???? I would like to get an intake but I am low on the funds. Maybe when the next financial aid is cut in two months I will have some new stuff for my car.....2500 minus books lets see what can i get???/ANY SUGGESTIONS???

i bought a K&N from Cruzer for $15 for my ES. i haven't really noticed much difference, but for $15 i never have to buy another air filter again.

Here's what I did to mine.

I'm working on the top of my stock airbox right now to fit that cone filter in it... I'm pretty sure it will fit coz the cone can go it. When this happen it will be sucking air from outside plus I have a stock look intake (its all about OEM style baby! hehe) I'm also planning to have a somekind of tube that's connected to the bottom part of the airbox and goes to the airdam. But we'll see after I complete this getho mod hehe

uh, dude, it would have been a lot easier to drop a panel filter in there.

what exactly is a panel filter? and does anyone know the answer to my original question, if the improved airflow of a k&n filter right after the MAF is worth the hotter air being taken in?

drop in or panel filter is the same as your stock filter except its better than stock. K&N carries them too

Well it sounds better than stock and it will defenitely sound better than the drop in filter. I'm refering (cone filter) to the same filter those short ram or CAI intakes. The K&N i used (the one it the picture) is a K&N cone filter from my Golf's Neuspeed intake and it sound deeper than stock

dichiee,
R the K&N drop in filters that costly? And if you've tried them, did you find any diff? Sir N suggested them and I'm tempted, altho the cost R kinda high.

Oh, and I've owned two GTI's: 1984 & 16V 1989... I miss the former the most. The latter was a bomb that went off.

Yes I've tried the drop in will make a difference than stock... it will sound different and the throtle response will be better than stock too. I'm not sure about pricing. I'm not really a fan of those intakes that have nice and shiny pipes. Stock airbox with a drop-in will be fine combo it with a cat-back and your car will breathe better. So if your like me who doesn't like those pop-the-hood-wow-shiny-pipe thing and loves oem-look hehe then go with Sir Nuke's suggestion

I'm leaning towards the drop in and look forward to the response. I too think the shiny pipes and external cones are ostentatious. I'd consider an all black AEM one that cost less than a Injen CAI.

besides looks, is there any difference in performance between the stock intake with a drop in k&n or a CAI?

well I haven't try the CAI but they said you'll get about 8HP gain.
And the filter is sucking cold air so its better than the drop in.

ok, so heres the question: would i get better performance out of a k&n panel filter in the stock intake or a cheapo intake off of ebay or a k&n cone filter stuck right on the MAF? id like to go CAI eventually, but this is until i can get the money.
