Just realized dealer never gave me state inspection sticker..

So, I bought my CX-5 on August 31 and promptly received my registration and permanent tags about 2 1/2 weeks after I bought it. I remember asking the guy while leaving, do I need anything else? Is there any other stuff you guys have for me? - and nothing. My boyfriend and I just realized this weekend that I don't have a Virginia inspection sticker. Now, I assume I haven't been pulled over for this since cops generally aren't looking for missing inspection stickers, but rather red rejection stickers. However, I know I should have gotten a valid state inspection sticker along with my registration (don't know why I didn't think about it at the time, or before this!). I do NOT want to pay the inspection fee on my own (though it's only like $16 in VA) since this was the dealer's f***-up. I plan to call them...but might wait until Saturday, when it is November and I would get a November sticker instead of October (might as well, right?). Has this happened to anyone? Did you get your state inspection sticker with your registration, or did it come on the car?

Some states do not require a sticker for the first year as the car is new and conforms...

The FAQ sections starts with this:

Do new vehicles need to be submitted for the annual safety inspection?
New vehicles purchased in Virginia that have been inspected in accordance with an inspection requirement of the manufacturer or distributor are not required to undergo the initial annual safety inspection. Placement of an inspection sticker on the windshield of a vehicle will be at the automobile dealers option.

Well, every other new CX-5 driving around with their dealer license plates (bought from the same dealer) have an inspection sticker, and I don't, leading me to believe they just forgot about mine.

Also, RIGHT below what you copied and pasted is this:

While the new language in Section 46.2-1158.01 states that “an inspection sticker may be affixed to the vehicle as required by Section 46-2-1163.”, for several practical reasons, an approval sticker should be affixed to the vehicle. The reasons are as follows:

Once the purchaser drives the vehicle off the lot, it no longer meets the definition of a new vehicle as defined in Section 46.2-1500 of the Code of Virginia. Not if, but when the purchaser is stopped by law enforcement for not displaying an inspection sticker, and returns to the selling dealership for a sticker, the vehicle will be subject to an official state inspection like any other used vehicle. This obviously could lead to customer dissatisfaction.
The affixing of the sticker to the new vehicle will prevent the vehicle from being unnecessarily stopped by law enforcement.
In the absence of a sticker, there will be no visual reminder to the driver when the vehicle needs to be re-inspected. If the vehicle is not re-inspected as required by Section 46.2-1157 of the Code of Virginia, the operator would be subject to a traffic summons.

The affixing of an official inspection sticker to all “new vehicles” will be to the mutual benefit of the automobile dealer, the customer, and law enforcement.

SO, I don't want to get pulled over unnecessarily. How is the officer to know whether I'm driving around a brand new 2015 or an older 2014 and trying to skirt the inspection? It sounds like I would be on the hook to pay for the inspection, which I don't think I'm obligated to do.

Not to get in the way of attention seeking, but have you called the dealer and asked if they will put one on the windshield?

bx - I totally agree with your position. But as your quoted text says, "may" and "should" is not the same as "must". So yes, the dealer should have done it, it's the right thing to do, but it is NOT required.

Not yet, I am planning to but wanted to wait until Nov. 1 so I get an extra month of inspection (laugh)
