Hey yall,
Just bought my Mazda5 in July. It's a black on black 2009 with 31,000 miles on it. So far we like the car alot. It's my wife's car, but I find myself driving it more than her. I am a tall guy and still have lots of room in this MicroVan. I also love the look. Been searching for a good forum to join so I can learn the right and wrongs about this car. Going to atempt a oil change in the next few days and looking on how to do it right the first time. Looking forward to talk with all of yall.

Welcome. :) Oil change is easy, you just need a 10mm and 17mm wrench and one of these:

Well, I just finished reading the oil chang post on the how too post. Great job with all the pics and everything. Will atempt it later this week.

Thanks for the welcome!

It's as easy as it can possibly be other than the cover on the bottom. Some hate it, but I like it. It's worth the extra time removing to have the belts and other parts covered from rain, mud, and salt.

On the '09, Mazda changed the filters mid-year from the cartridge style to the cannister style. Make sure you have the right filter before getting too far into the process.

A good place to buy 5-packs of filters is here:

How many keys do you have? If you have two, you can pick up a third as a spare to save on overall shipping, the keys would come precut if you give them your VIN. If you have two keys you can program both the chip and the transponder yourself, if you only have one key you have to have the dealer do the programming which is an hour or 90 minutes of billed labor.

we only got one key with the car. :( Kind of sad about that. Would love to have just a normal key to put on my keychain. Read the way to program it myself, but only have one key and don't want to pay big bucks for one from a dealer. My nieghbor is a locksmith, but doesn't do new Mazdas. Dangit!

My used 5 also came with only one key & fob, on advice from this forum I bought an ebay key for $50 bucks shipped, took it to my local dealer who charged $60 bucks all in for the programming and cutting (said it was 30 minutes of labour), even washed and vacuumed the car for free.

Much better than the $300 -$350 for a new key/fob from Mazda!

You can get a normal key, it's Mazda part number F1Y1762GX, MSRP = $35.17. You can buy it for $27.43, cut, from Montgomery Mazda, they have free shipping on orders over either $100 or $125.

Just keep in mind that the only key hole to open the Mazda is on the driver's door. It's what I keep on my key ring, the transponder is too bulky in my opinion and I don't want to have to worry about my keys getting wet or getting bumped / damaged.

The switchblade style key costs $162.00, also from Montgomery Mazda.

CC43675RYC: transponder part of switchblade style key, $123.50 (MSRP = $158.37)
G2YA762GXB: key part of switchblade style key, $38.02 (MSRP = $48.76)
KRTT09001: key ring, $0.48 (MSRP = $0.62)

The keys come precut, but you would still have to have a local dealer do the programming since you only have one key.

As an alternative, some people have found cheap keys on eBay and had a local hardware store cut them, take a look at the key thread in the "How To" section for more information.

Another good Mazda dealer who has an online presence is Med Center Mazda: http://www.mazdaparts.org/
