Just got my 2009 Speed3!

Fortunately for me, I'm in a house. I just let mine idle with the hood up for a few minutes, then shut it off. I close the hood a couple of hours later.

 Can I get your address? I would like that SRI and BPV lol

J/K but that seems like a little bit overkill, when I get home I just sit in my car for a little bit and take the opportunity to gather any trash or belongings I might have left for some reason, maybe 2 minutes ;)

that's a lot of trash to be collecting for 2 minutes... belongings included.....(drunk)(wink) =p

I feel like I'm wasting time and fuel by letting my car idle if the turbo was never really engaged in the last few minutes anyways. Being as I am however, I always like to play it on the safe side, but I think it could be over kill right now.

Thoughts?

If you weren't driving it like you stole it just before stopping, and the last minute or two of your drive were thru apartment or subdivision streets at low speeds, then you should be OK to just park it & go. The 30-second cooldown is intended for when you stop immediately following a hard run.

That said, there's nothing wrong with erring on the side of caution. Turbocharged engines don't scare me (they make me all warm & tingly), but I do respect the potential fragility of a turbocharger. So I change my oil every 3-5k, depending on conditions, using full synthetic oil, and whenever I stop, I leave the engine running while I undo my seat belt, toss random electronic devices back into the glove box/center console, etc.

But I only make a concerted effort to idle for 30+ seconds if I was just running like a bat outta hades.

This pretty much mirrors exactly my thoughts. I think from now on a 15 second idle will be fine for casual driving conditions where I don't engage the turbo. I mean I'm never in such a rush that I have to go 40MPH into a parking space, JAM my parking gear up and RUN like hell to wherever. But on the flip side, I think 30s-1minute idle is really unnecessary (except after hard runs as you mentioned).

Just to clarify, the only real reason I say I'm weary of turbo motors is 1.) this is my first FI car and 2.) I've had a couple friends with turbo cars who always complained about them. Of course, they would mod them pretty hard (AFIAK without getting a proper tune, either).

I'm sure by the time it comes to sell the MS3, I will not have any serious doubts about turbo cars! Most mods I plan are minor (SRI, MM (inserts), etc.) Nothing like a MBC or bigger turbo ;)

all you'd need to do is have a temp sensor for the oil near the turbo then you can idle/let it cool for specific amounts of time....

all this talk about 30 seconds and such is highly unscientific

i wonder if there is a stock oil temp sensor in that location that say a cobb access port can plug into?

thoughts?

I always do this with my msp. I make sure theres like 30 sec of idle. Its not that long if you think of it. By the time you get yourself together and got everything secured, took the belt off..its past 30 sec. Also, try the tubro timer if you cant wait. The price of having a proper running tubro, imagine the benefits..lol

Welcome and i saw your post at the dfwmazdas site..welcome there too..

Just got my MS3 GT, White Mica, dunno what CWP is but I had a hard time on the color. Wanted the silver but they discontinued it for 09. Do think I like the white, doubt I see many more of them on the road. Wife has a silver gray 3 5 door BTW, like mine Mazda better, haha.

So far break in is don't smoke the tires too much or hold 85 on a trip. The auto headlights and wipers seems like the dumbest thing about the car and I don't have a place for my SpeedPass.

Still getting used to the gearbox, have to think about every shift and try to remember what gear I was in. Not the case for my 3 5 door or 88 BMW M3. The BMW is for sale BTW, MS3 is more fun!

So far only problems are black smoke putting my foot in it and a irregular idle. Varies between about 900 and 100 RPM for no reason. 24 MPG on my commute with the cold weather and tight engine but a few 100 mph bursts on a short 4 lane stretch of the commute.

Loving the car!
