03 MazdaSpeed Protege
I just picked up my mazdaspeed protege yesterday... Its the o3 and its black with 23,000 miles its completly stock.

What would be the first modification before anything?
and what should I do after the first ....

If you could tell me brands and prolly the best brand for the money to since I dont have a endless cash flow

Thanks
Matt

I usually don't tell people to search, but there are so many threads on this. Do a little search, and if you have specific questions we will be happy to answer them.

BTW, good purchase and welcome to the forums(rockon)

19" rims, get a boost controller and turn the boost up to 15+ psi. Ha ha, Don't do either. Search around like jurgs said, you'll find more than an abundunce of info.

Welcome, and keep your rods in the motor:)

same boat as you... i bought my 03 black mica msp stock about 2 months ago. so far: smic intercooler, hardpipes, injen intake, greddy tt, stewart warner boost gauge, autometer dual pod pillar. smic kit and injen are my fav mods so far.

BEST "BANG FOR THE BUCK" PERFORMANCE

Autometer Ultra-Lite Boost Gauge (20 psi boost/30 in. Hg vacuum): $42.99 from Jegs
Autometer dual gauge pod (full A-pillar): $56.99 from Jegs
Set of 4 NGK BKR7E spark plugs: $8.00
JoeP MBC @ 9 psi: $45.00
Total Cost: Well under $200 with tax+shipping
Gains: 0-60 should be around 6.5 seconds (0.5 second improvement). High 14's are attainable in the 1/4 mile.

Tires would be another good upgrade, but kind of pricey. idk what brand the 03 came with (I remember my roommate complaining about them all the time), but my 03.5 came with Potenza 040, which aren't too bad in my opinion.

This is a pretty good mod list. Maybe a little expensive for someone on a budget, but a good list to follow.

I would say DON'T up the boost. Having the first mod be a boost controller is asking for trouble. I'd say start with an exhaust, then intercooler, then some sort of tuning (you'll have to search around for that, because there are a lot of options that people are constantly improving.) Suspension upgrades are fun, too. The car's strong point is already handling, imagine what it's like with upgraded suspension (trust me, it's fun!) In the end, it all just depends on your goals for the car and what you wanna do. Just browse around the boards and you'll start to pick up things pretty quickly, like what works and what doesn't.

Most important thing I can say though is don't up the boost unless you can afford a new engine. Have fun!

same tires

yeah, i don't agree with BANG for the BUCK post. it's cheap, yes, but playing with turbos is different. you can really blow your motor up if something goes wrong... especially with a relatively simple manual boost controller. i say save up. if you don't have cash right now, save for a bit and get something of better quality.

boost gauge
catless downpipe
short shifter
motor mount
side mount IC
intake (mostly for sound)
