Just drove the new, Gen3 MZ6

Mazdaspeed6
The car is amazing, all the way around. It is Mazda's masterpiece.

It is beautiful to behold in person, and is IMO one of the nicest exterior designs on a sedan in recent history. I thought the rear end was pretty humdrum and a mismatch with the rest of the car when I saw it in photos, but once the car is seen in person, it all flows so well.

The interior is fantastic. Materials are great, and its design is similar to the CX-5s. Very simple, but functional, quality and elegant. I drove a GT with the off-white leather with red stitching. The seats are amazing great comfort and bolstering. Driver and passenger were power (maybe 8-way?), with driver side featuring memory (something the 2013 CX-5 did not have). Trunk space is great. Can stuff several dead hookers in there. The opening, though, is only average. Rear seats fold at a button's touch.

Also features rear air, which is something sorely missing on the CX-5. A few cubbies here and here, with the same old hideaway cup holders in the center console. Nice center console space, and the center armrest slides fort ward for adjustment and comfort. Good glove compartment space. Paddle shifters are present, and can be used with the shifter in drive, being activated with a flick of the downshift paddle.

Transmission feels awesome. Responds to paddle commands instantly. It is similar to the CX-5's in which it feels very stagey. But mimicking a MTX is definitely a notable quality of its design element. When getting feisty on the throttle, downshifts when decelerating hang RPM right in the meat of the powerband, anticipating rethrottling out of an apex, I presume.

And the engine? Yeah, it is a little buzzy and isn't happy until 3K RPM, but it is NOT an underpowered car. It doesn't feel the way the CX-5 does with the 2.0l. It is plenty potent for everyday driving and the power band is really nice and impressive.
Where this car will melt your mind is in handling and maneuvering and even braking. You will be dumbfounded by its nimbleness. It doesn't matter what I type here, or how I describe it. It just needs to be driven. I encourage everybody here to go take one for a spin on a backroad.

The best part about today is I just showed up to take a look at the new 6. A couple sales guys I know well walked out and tossed me the keys. Drove it sales pitch free and passenger free. What's better than that? This will be my next car. No doubt about it.

Thanks for your review. Nice to see paddle shifters that respond instantly. I wasn't sure if Mazda was going to pull it off well, but they seem to have done so.

I'll be checking my local dealer, but I doubt I'll ever get a test drive.

I really, really like the new 6, but I think I'll personally hold out for the diesel, if I end up getting one.

Any thoughts on tire/wind noise at highway speed? How fast is the engine spinning @ 70mph?

Thanks for review. I saw the new 6 at SJ auto show yesterday, looked great.

Sounds like the extra power of the 2.5L makes a difference. But the buzziness of an even larger in-line 4 banger can only be partially masked with balance shaft.

How are the seats in the Mazda6 during the test drive? It has fewer adjustments than the Accord.

I confired that the power driver seat is an 8-way. Seats isn't a massive selling point for me personally, so I didn't take close note of them.
Here is what I can tell you - They are comfortable, supportive, offer good adjustment, good lumbar, and also feature better than average side bolstering. As far as materials, the leather is above average, IMO. I have yet to sit in a new Accord, so I cannot offer a comparison. But, compared to my Speed6 (Mazda way copped out on the MS6's seats, IMO), they are superior.

Didn't seem overly intrusive. Pretty quiet, as far as tire roar. Also tame over bumpy roads. But, you have figure, I am used to driving daily my Speed6, which has a turbo-back exhaust, noisy turbo and 88 duro trans, pass and motor mounts. It's a little rough around the edges, so essentially anything else is dreamy to me. My other toy is 72' Chevy C-10, which isn't exactly subtle either. haha!
At 70MPH it was pretty docile. Didn't take exact note of it, though. Didn't cruise much, as I was busy testing out the 2.5l for passing and such. :P
Not sure what the gearing is, but seemed pretty average, perhaps comperable to my CX-5.

I was pretty satisfied with the power. It isn't any rocket ship, and is a great deal slower in a straight line or in passing ability than my modded MS6, but it really isn't a slouch either. And you have to figure, the new 6 is a what, 3200-3300 lb. car? So, it is lighter or around the same weight as the CX-5. So, relatively, you can imagine what the extra 30 hp/tq or whatever does for acceleration. Though, a 2.0l powered MZ6 would still be totally adequate, just as it is in the CX5. And that's saying alot for the size of the car. Mazda really nailed the weight redux, and balance of the car.
For example, my Speed6 is a smaller car, but weighs 400 lbs. more. Sure, it has a few more heavy components (AWD), but that is really impressive.

Just drove it again tonight and the mirrors aren't as bad as I thought. I will be ordering a silver GT tomorrow.

Yaayy! Looking forward to hearing about your ownership.

I definitely can't commit to the gasser before the opportunity to drive the oil burner. But, it is extremely tempting!

Saw it in the flesh for the first time tonight and was equally impressed as the others who have experienced same. Since I'm annoyed @ BMW for not offering NA power plants, this MZ6 will definitely be on my radar when the wife's ride is due for replacement.

So I thought this car was supposed to be on sale now, yet it seems dealer inventory is scarce to non-existent. The website for my nearest dealer has no mention of the 2014 6. I also find it strange that you can't build one on Mazda's website yet, and no publications have driven a US-spec production version.

What's the story with the release of this car? Mazda doesn't seem to be doing a great job with the launch so far.

I have noted this same issue. On a couple of the other 6 forums, quite a few members have suggested that thair local dealer has one or no models at all.
From what I gather, most higher volume dealers received the pilot model late last year, which was to start marketing the car early, by placing it on the showroom floor.
When I made this same original post on this thread on the 5th on another forum, a few members subsequently stated that their dealer was still disallowing test drives of their pilot model.
I'm unclear on exactly why there wasn't a uniform sales date. The day I drove the new 6 at my dealer, it was for sale. They kept asking me to trade my Speed6 for it. Haha!

This is very reminiscent of the CX-5 launch; Very hyped up launch, but a clear supply issue which seemed unrelated to just demand. What I mean is, I bought mine before the massive demand, on March 10th, and there still wasn't anything to choose from, save for a couple trims and 2-3 colors. Basically what was trickling in on the car haulers.

Anyway, there's already a guy on another 6 forum whose first post was declairing he'd just purchased a new MZ6. He bought one of the Soul Red pilot models and said he paid sticker. He's in Jersey. So they're for sale for sure. He hasn't posted too many details.

My dealer in Philly just listed a soul red 14 GT on its website. Their are still none in inventory on the mazdausa site, nor is the '14 "build your vehicle" up yet

I passed by my dealer over the weekend and saw that they still had the model that I drove on the 5th, plus they'd received a second grey one. Looked like a GT in passing...

Just bought a 2014 Mazda 6

The car is amazing, drives excellent, has great features such as the touch screen, rear view camera, voice commands for everything, bluetooth, navigation, interior is awesome, exterior is killer, everywhere I go people ask me what kind of car this is and they dont believe its a Mazda. I wasnt a Mazda fan and I was never even going to buy a Mazda, but when I saw the design I fell in love with it.
