Just bought a 2011 GT w/Nav, question on audio

I haven't been completely through the manual yet, so if this merits a RTM type response I accept full responsibility :)

I noticed there's a source section for an iPod as well as Bluetooth streaming. I'm a Droid guy so not big on iPods, but if I can quickly and easily integrate one to it I might grab one just to make it easier.

I did try the BT streaming - and while the audio worked, most controls (play/pause worked) and song title did not. Is that an implementation thing, or does the stereo never really display song info or controls.

Does the BT streaming work seamlessly as far as control or song info work for anyone? Do I need anything other than an iPod to integrate to the stereo? Are only certain iPods supported?

Re: the BT streaming - the song title not working is a limitation of the AVCRP version in your phone. If it's too low, you will only get play/pause/skip. If it's 1.2 (I believe), you are supposed to get full title functionality too. On my 2012 CX-9, I just updated my iPhone4 to iOS5 which is supposed to be AVCRP 1.2, but I still don't get song titles. However, another user has been able to get song titles from his iPhone with iOS5...there is a thread about it.

My BT streaming (play/pause/skip only) works flawlessly. I get into the car, turn the car on, after it completes it's re-pairing (~10 seconds after turning car on), my music starts playing automatically. No fuss, no muss, no wires.

Yeah, just checked and it appears I'm stuck on AVCRP 1.2. The upside is it looks like the phone I'm planning to buy will come with a version of Android carrying 1.4, so I'll be covered!

Now - is iPod integration really just a 3.5mm audio line in? They really expect you to buy another module to plug in to get steering wheel controls?

It's more apple than Mazda.

I believe that particular headunit doesn't have the ipod authentication chip. The chip is in the module. The chip also controls the ipod functions. Apple charges licensing and parts fees based on the number of units sold so keeping it out of the head unit is a cost thing as well as maybe a space thing.
